how hard is it to work retail? i like manual labor but i hate the thought of dealing with angry customers. is retail THAT stressful or hard? any recs for stores to apply to?

fuck u

Depends on the store, target, nope, Walmart, yes

If you work at retail, you will have to get used to a shit load of customers that think they are the only customer on the whole world and that they deserve to have every fucking thing served in a silver plate. Also, you will have a stupid boss that will have you do a load of shit that you are not supposed to do for no extra money.

You will hear thing like "It's your job to do [something absolutely stupid that isn't your job]" or "I spent $10 monthly here and this is the service I get? I guess [some other store] will appreciate my business" like it actually matters in a daily basis.

Still, if you are not the kind of person that gets angry about that kind of shit, you can actually laugh at the customers and have it will be a pretty easy job.

Also, if you have any specific question, feel free to ask

>Walmart
>manual labor

This, on the money. I worked at Lowe's home improvement in the spring, outside lawn and garden. Pay was shit and the schedule/hours were all over the place, buy not a bad gig otherwise, basically just walked around outside and dicked around all day. But yeah like 75% of your customer interactions will be unmemorable, 20% will be awesome people, and the remaining 5% will be people who decided when they woke up that all they wanted to do was go be an asshole to someone today.

Get to meet hot girls

Meet/stalk around the store. Definitely a plus.

It's easy if you have common sense and can handle your temper when dealing with the autistic masses. Moving up is easy too if you are a decent worker and assert yourself to be noticed. There's a great deal of manual labor depending on the department you are in. But once you hit department manager it's cruise control.

>works for walmart

is it hard to deal with rude customers? overall though is it hard and didbtou dread going? also how do you quit, talk to a manager or something?

i have a job now at a family buisness where i get to help work on trucks and sweep up floors, weedeat some, etc and i really like it but it isnt hard. i was hust curious about what to expect if i had to get a retail job sometime is all

thank you

See if you can get a housekeeping job at an independant living retirement home.

NOT assisted living.

Every home I've worked at in eight states has been AWESOME. I love the residents and atmosphere these places have.

My husband and I are co-managers of a home here.

I started in housekeeping. He's a chef by trade.

apply to be a truck unloader.

actual manual labor.
minimal customers.

Rude customers happen, you can't let it get to you. It's easier if you just remember that they're probably totally worthless. "Oh well I'm taking my business to wherever the fuck".
Great, see ya later, fuckface.

You could join me at mcdonalds and ave a heart attack?

>is it hard to deal with rude customers?

Not really.

You just need to know how to talk to them and how to make them feel special. Some of them will try to get on your nerves on purpose to get you in trouble or get a compensation due to "lack of professionalism" or some excuse like that.

Still, most of them, if you are patient enough and not an autistic fuck, they will even apologize and say something like "I know its not your fault, it's just that I'm really stressed".

I would say that job is really fucking easy. Just walk around, do some shit here and there and go home at the end of the day.

If you prefer to avoid customers, listen to

thank you bud
how is mc donalds, is bad or something? i applied to one a few years ago but they never called back lol

High speed, constant motion.
If your slow they get you out of there as soon as they can
Its a bitch

what do you have to do most of the time? besides the high speed is it difficult work?

You a man or chick?
Gay or straight in public

>I like manual labor
Good god OP working at Walmart is not manual labor. You quite literally don't need any experience or anything to join Wally world, however depending on which state you're in, if you have a criminal record then they may not consider you. Other than that they'll take you, just be prepared to work around niggers and stupid people, and old "retired" people as well. It's a poor persons job.

man and straight all the time

Then your on grill and production
Youll do one or the other

Youll come home smelling like grease and hating yourself
Its phenominal

You flip burgers, put Mayo on the buns with the mayo caulking gun, throw a pickle or two on there if you feel like it, salt some fries and deal with fat people all day. I've never worked there but I imagine if you're not retarded then you would more than thrive in that environment, granted you're not autistic with dealing with people too.

You are all kinds of simple

It's literally the easiest job you can have.
If you can't deal with other humans in general, whether they're mad or not, you shouldn't bother leaving your house at all. Just rot in your bedroom

I work in Walmart produce. It's not bad especially if you work mornings like I do. Just work the old freight and you're pretty much in the cooler the rest of the day. If you have coworkers who aren't cripples or old women it's a sweet gig. Pays $10.50 an hour with above rate benefits, retirement plan, and fair PTO accumulation rates. Also it's easy to move up if you're not a lazy sack of shit, and DM pays $15 in my department just starting out. 5% pay raises if you're good.

AMA

And yet I'd likely become manager on my first day there, I am anything but simple friend. It's kind of annoying when people glorify working at some shit tier 9$ an hour job, like they work harder or smarter than someone with a real job. Don't get me wrong, I understand that when times are tough you gotta do what you gotta do to make money. But I tend to call a spade, a spade, there's nothing glorified about working in fast food, we don't live in the 50s anymore

Also the people you hear talking about enough customers are actually just a bunch of whiny faggots. Just go to the /Walmart subreddit and see for yourself. Customers are nice in general, it's the lazy fucks you work with that get to you.

Have some dignity and get a real job.

Even at Walmart, the day people don't do labor. only the night crew stockers. That is called El Walmarto, and you will help maybe 2 customers and it's easy.

I'm an irrigation tech. Make way more than when I was cooking or doing retail. I ride around in my own truck, my duties are laid out during hire, and a customer has to pay up a service fee of $175 before we will even come out to look at any issues, unless it's a quote for big ticket items. If you are in the south or the arid west you will make lots of money because the calls never stop. I averaged 64 hours a week this summer. Don't try and get on an install crew, that's hard digging and fast paced work. The money is good but only if the driver or foreman wants to get hours. We had a foreman have a tantrum because he said "I make more on paper but he makes way more than I do and that's bullshit". My boss is cool as fuck and gives out work like it's water, free to whoever wants it, the big thing is when you get into specialty irrigation and your the only one who can do it.

Seriously you said you don't mind labor call up and find a landscape company hiring for irrigation they will train you in everything you need to know. Some companies even offer company trucks that you can take home as a perk.

Holy shit don't even start. O/N stockers don't do any labor worth a damn. Come to my cooler and downstack my truck bitch, then go back home complaining how your back hurts or some shit because you can't lift 60 pounds of cucumbers above your head repeatedly.

>But muh 1 gallon water tho...

is it hard work (ex: fast paced, confusing or stressful) and do you have to go to any meetings/training before you start? also do you get to go home after your shift ends or do they sometines make you stay overtime?

>tip my fedora
>turn 360°
>walk away

You get stuck doing the same station the whole day. The work isn't hard, but unless you're a teenager you have to deal with office politics way too much and from shitty people that don't even deserve to be there. The only good job at McDonald's is the maintenance one. I was making $3 an hour more than the managers to clean shake machines and fryers everyday, and unloaded a semi three times a week, rotate stock and hang out on the roof smoking with the other maintenance guy.

Nah it's easy. you get numb to peoples bitching and it stops bothering you after a couple dozen times. Then you learn ways to sneak in little jabs using your words that don't get you fired. Like when they walk away pissed as hell cause they don't get their way. You say with a big smile on your face "have a great day". Gets my dick so hard every time.

The days of the customer is always right is gone. Thanks price matching.

Work in a "specialist" area, like deli, TLE, or bakery. Not only are your interactions with customers controlled, but the team you work with are going to be dependable and there is a much higher chance of getting promoted if you put the effort in. Sales associates get shafted, it most of the places I've worked the cashiers and sales associates that became CSMs or higher just sucked the right dick.

Do NOT work electronics. You will come to hate humanity, your self, and the autistic fucks you work with. Not only that, but you'll be expected to work Photo AND Site to Store, most of the time in the same shift you're supposed to be working the desk because you're the only one scheduled that night.

that actually sounds pretty awesome ill keep this in mind! what do you do when you go to someones home? do you look for places or ways to set up a way to water their yard witg sprinkler systems?

Get a job working ramp agent for an airline. Get to load bags, push and tow planes, absolutely no customers to deal with because you're on the tarmac.

Ive been doing retail management for a few years now. Stressful but pay is good and i get tons of paid vacation time.

Jesus fuck, you guys are cute with your "I pick up cucumbers for 8 hours s day" bs. If you want to brag and let your balls swag, then at least have something real to back it up.

>Source
I moved furniture for a couple years in Canada,18 hours a day and unlike other major companies we hauled fucking ass running in and out of the house getting shredded. Packing the truck like Tetris, moving three different houses every day then sleeping inside the truck to wake up and do it again. I made 25 dollars an hour driving the truck, and had almost killed myself a few times because I have type one diabetes so the stress on my body wasn't easy. If you wanna talk shit at least back it up, working at Walmart is easy as fuck if you have no moral obligations.

This whole thread reminds me that many of my life choices have actually been pretty damn good.

You sharpened your katana real sharp today kiddo

>above your head
wtf

is that the required way to carry stuff? i can carry like 100lbs but if i had to carry 50 over my head that just sounds awkward on ghe arms and hard to carry

Our landscape company is one of the biggest in the state contract wise for new homes. We have 18 builders on contract to do everything from grading (empty dirt lot), irritation, landscaping, patios, outdoor living areas, sod, ECT. So the techs have to fix anything wrong with the systems that we installed for the builders.

Sometimes it's as easy as turning the clock on to as complex as rebuilding a pump or irrigation manifold. Most of the time it's coverage issues mainly caused by clogged screens that are in the sprays. Nothing makes me happier than to unclog a head and say that's it, when it's a three minute job they just paid $175 for.

I'll be on most the night if you have any questions. What state are you in because I know who is hiring in our area.

>Hardwork
Not really for regular associates. The hardest departments I know of are Produce, Dairy, and probably Electronics. Mainly because these ones are largely affected by holidays or seasonal things, plus the previous shift can really fuck you up. But also unlike most other departments you can't solo these.

Other than those, every depart is the same. Show up and pull picks, work freight, zone repeat. All day long. DM is harder but not by much since in most depts it's a glorified associate with extra powers and responsibilities.

>Training
Roughly 12 hours of videos initially followed by a new program called pathways which last about six months. Ends in a pay raise. Easy shit, more vids.

>Overtime
They ask, but if you're the guy who never says yes they'll stop asking you. I always go for overtime, my friend never does. It's not too often they ask either except for holidays or big projects.

>Talking about Walmart jobs
>But muh moving company

oh okay thank you! the 12 hours of cideos and six months of training is that during your working time at walmart or do you have to go somewhere to do it and do you have to do it before you can even start your first shift?

I met this little guy on an irrigation service call.

it really depends on where you're working. my first retail job was at Old Navy and that was fine, but it was in a rich neighborhood and customer were, generally, kind. a few times people tried to haggle with me in the clearance section and it would frustrate the hell out of me (i was 16-17). i worked at kmart throughout college, my college was right next to a very, very bad neighborhood, and that job was hell. i was just a cashier, so i spent all day at the register. i had a customer spit on me, a customer shit in front of me while i was checking them out, i had a baby puke on me, i had so many people scream at me.
the hardest part, imo, was the fact that if you had to miss work because you were sick, or not feeling well mentally, or had a paper to write, or a doctors appointment, you were fucked. you had to weigh--was x more important than your job? bc you could very quite literally lose your job for doing x. also, the fact that it's pretty hard to get full time working retail; that takes its toll.

good luck, friend

What's the matter? Couldn't think of anything else to say? The only thing you've come up with so far is name calling, at least put up a defense for your argument if you're gonna shit post and stop wasting peoples time pretending to be something you're not.

You've got to put the freight on the steel racks in the cooler, but it's more so for maneuvering around the cooler when you have it jam packed with pallets. You can't walk through the spaces with the crates at waist level, so it's either do an awkward crab walk which is hell on your back or just hoist that shit clear above the pallet.

Why would I fight you.
You have not had experience in the job of ANY kind.
Your opinion is invalid.
I may well call you edgy and call it a day 'manager'

All I'm saying is, adult males these days are typically pathetic, and not just in an alpha/beta sense. Not many people can handle responsibilities anymore, that's why you have grown ass men and women pumping gas and flipping burgers. Like let's see some initiative already

You do training on the clock in the training room. If you're starting at a facility not yet constructed, which is common, there will be a temporary training building nearby. Or you'll just go to a close by store.

The initial orientation training Computer Based Learning videos are required before starting your job, mainly so they can say it's not their fault if you decided to climb into the compacter. It's not job specific, just general things. Your job specific training g is on the job training g coupled with this new Pathways system that lasts 6 months. 6 months is the magic time frame btw until you're no longer a new hire and have restraints lifted from you, like being fired after one no call no show.

Retail SUCKS. One rung above food services. Two year stint at Best Buy. customers are ASSHOLES. They treat you like SHIT and think they know everything, when in fact they know fucking nothing. Managers are assholes, always [pushing numbers numbers numbers down your throat. Think I am bullshitting? See what others say at www.Screw-Blue.com Fuck Retail.

Now you're just not making any sense, you could not possibly know any of those things from talking with me online. But I guess since you're obviously flustered you need to have the upper hand and resort to, once again, name-calling. You started this, take some responsibility and finish it, stop acting like a pissy little child and converse with me. What is there to be proud of working for McDonald's? Since you're so inclined to throw yourself under the bus for them

It's hard to make a call on it really. I quit school my last semester to take care of my grandma while I was working Walmart. They work nicely with things like that so I haven't left, but still I picked up another job cooking dinner for a fraternity after this went further south. You can't always know why that guy is flipping burgers, brother.

Pretty much but its not like wonderful jobs are out there for everyone thats why everyone is pissed off

Honestly what a lot of people would consider a shit job actually pays damn good. Go do some honest labor working as an oil field rig hand or doing some warehouse work. Hell, Walmart Warehouses pay $18 hour for base wage as an item picker which is more than pay grade B department Managers.

Hard work pays.

Not him, but just stop kid, youre embarressing yourself

Come do lobster sometime bud you will know what a real day of work is, there is always something harder to do let the guy moan you elitist shit lord

I started a restaurant doing over nights, took a year before I was lead on nights, another year to be head store manager, another year to be regional manager, but I found out that the company fires first before investigating unsubstantiated claims from bad female employees

I've worked in food service (dominos) and retail(Office Depot, seasonal position for back to school) I can say that Office Depot was a much, much better place to work. Even during our busiest times, it was still nothing compared to the stress of the dominos dinner rush. I just got to chill, mozy through the store and organize shelves while helping customers if we had any. I actually enjoyed it for the most part, but I have no other retail job to compare it to. As for the customers, especially when you're working the register, there's a decent amount of horrible, horrible people. It'll make you hate humanity, especially minorities such as the asian immigrants that think they're entitled to 20 minutes at the register, holding the line up, while they make sure they got everything. People getting mad because the sign said $4 but it rang up as 3.99. People are fucking ridiculous, but that was the worst part. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Retail like working at department store is really low end and honestly worse then working food services.
There are a few exceptions to people who really put in the aptitude and love/knowledge of a product and do make a profession at being a sales person. But that's different and not the same then working at macy's or walmart then a specialized store or boutique.

I'm not saying retail is a waste but for the stress =/= shitty pay it's not worth it. You are better off digging ditches for a foreman at least you can gain skills or work towards more skilled work in construction. Retail you will never climb up to a manager.
To top it off Retail is dying in droves and even those who are hiring are squeezing everything out of their sales associates. The big box stores are hemoraging cash mainly due to the internet and also the fact that people believe it or not are wising up to buying shit they don't need from china. So people who have money are going to go through online channels or smaller local stores.

Honestly if you love pets, aquariums try going for an aquarium service tech. The work can be hard but getting paid $20- $30 hr is better then getting paid starvation tier wages at $9.50hr and its not something you hate. Plus you can build better social relations with invested clients vs asshole customers bitching at you for a discount.

>Yeah id like walk in and the first day be running the store at least thats what my dad told me as i slack off at my family bussiness and not have a fucking clue about anything

True enough, like I said before I understand that when times are tough you gotta do what you gotta do. I've just never been the kind of guy to stay in one place too long, not just physically but career wise as well. I have a hard time wrapping my mind around how someone could stay at Walmart all their lives, though I do have a different way of thinking, or so I think anyways. I constantly feel the need to improve and perfect things, and learn new things, if I don't then I feel as though I'm failing myself. I wake up at 4:30 every morning to go to the gym, proceed to workout disciplined like, go to school where I am the best student in the field of study also showing up an hour before class starts to prepare, wear a 30 lb weight belt all day long in the blistering fl weather, go to work after school for 3-4 hours remodeling kitchens and bathrooms. So that's where I'm coming from I guess, all that with type one diabetes on top I can't really lay over and be normal. I just wished that other people would step up their game a bit.

Or you could throw the dumb pallets out of your way and when confronted tell them to keep that shit out of the way for safety reasons, or yeah crab walk like a bitch

Must be tiring going to mcdonalds seeing tyron working there knowing he fucks your girl on the side

Depends where you are, i scored a good gig so im lucky

thanks for the reply, i didnt even think about office depot. that doesnt sound bad. it kinda reminds me of what i do now

at my current job i typically sweep and clean up oil thats on the floors from trucks, and every few weeks i weedeat around the property. i also help with some jobs but i dont know much about trucks, like today when i took off a transmission oil pan to replace the transmission filter. it isnt hard and sometimes there isnt anything to do but i find something like emptying trash cans. i get paid 11.50 an hour, do you think thats too much for a job like that? its pretty fun honestly

You must jack off qhile looking at yourself

You can't. They're loaded with shit. If they aren't, they've been returned to receiving already. If you've ever been to the back of the store, there are loaded pallets in every cooler, storage area and hallway until at least 7pm.

Funny thing, I haven't gone to a fast food joint in over a year.
Suck a wang dumb shit
I'd be more than happy to, had plenty of friends do it that I had known to be kind of soft, as in if they could do it then I could do it. Choosing to work at Walmart, then complaining about working at Walmart is a bit foolish don't you think?
No but there could be, if people put more effort into making change that is.
Bring it on in boys, I can do this all night

worked 4 years at Target AMA

Not the person you replied to, but I was looking for a job for two years, chasing every lead I could find using Job-Search sites, newspapers, Craigslist, and walking into places until I finally gave up and put my application to Wal-Mart. Sometimes it's all you can get.

Whys that? Because I'm not lazy?

Retail sucks. It's not difficult per se, but it's one of the most demoralizing things you could do to yourself.

You will come to see people for what they really are - greedy, lazy, selfish, mean, and stupid. Examples will come not only from customers, but from your co-workers and bosses as well.

Also in my experience cashiering is the worst job anyone can have.

Currently work on an assembly line, p good.

Retail is shit
If you want manual labor, go for a Distribution Center instead.
Pays better but there is a production quota.

I had the best possible retail job while in college in the early 00's working at a record store. Listened to and talked about music all day while dealing with only the occasional asshole customer. Just about doesn't exist as a job anymore.

Yeah, that's how they enslave you user. Don't do it because it's just not worth it, there's always a way to make money out there if you know how to do it. I find that it pays to pay a professional to do your resume/cover letter, and that going into a place to speak with the manager directly and shake his hand works wonders. Plus you make sure he gets the resume in hand, rather than it being lost in a pile somewhere. Keep going back there every couple of days to check up, annoy him into giving you a job. Walmart and mcdonalds are part of a group of elitist companies that are destroying the united States and the western world, don't give them your obedience man.

Go apply at UPS or FedEx if you're looking to do manual labor with little human interaction.

I applied for a part-time night job 2 weeks ago at ups and I was hired last week. You basically load trucks for 2 hours, get a 10 minute break, then load for 2 more hours and go home.

You just suggested something I said I had tried.

I moved out of that area a while ago though. I'm still working in retail, but now for Harris Teeter. I do some side work for a charity now. It doesn't pay, but I do get to network with people in a field I want to work with. Biding my time for someone to need paid help.

If you like manual labor just do blue collar work.

the worst part of retail is stupid customers, after that it's stupid managers/supervisors

The main problem is doing the same thing every day and never seeing progress be made.
The second you finish, what you accomplished is torn down and when you come in the next day to more bare shelves you have to start all over.
Also it never ends. It just keeps comming.

Retail fucking sucks user. Nights, weekends, holidays. Shit customers, shit pay. Bosses & customers expect you to be optimistic & enthusiastic at all times. No normal human moods allowed. You are defective if you can't be constantly eager to help & smile. Old men can't make the bathroom & shit everywhere. I've followed more old people farting with every step than you'd ever believe. Actually that parts pretty cool. You might see cute girls but you're shit to them. You make shit wage or sometimes commission. I sell furniture at a 5% commission at a very recognizable recliner brand. Our average customer is like 80. Every time I see another white-haired old couple walk through the door I want to put a staple swastika in my forehead & vomit on my own shoes. Every time something new gets introduced, you're expected to believe it's the greatest thing ever, even though you were supposed to think the last greatest thing ever was the greatest thing ever until it wasn't anymore. There are a few good chances to be a smart ass & pull pranks, but it's not worth the soul-sucking abyss.

Currently work as a cashier at Big Lots and I absolutely despise it. I would honestly rather be stocking shelves or something. Literally nobody ever shops there and half the time I'm just standing at the register bored out of my mind because there's absolutely nothing to do. I'm trying to get on at walmart t work as an overnight stocker. What should i expect out of this job? Ive stocked shelves and unloaded trucks before at my other job, so i have some experience.

With what company?
I wanted to do this job.
Any tips?

Yeah volunteer work is always good, looks good in a resume plus I find it gives personal satisfaction as well, and like you said it's good for building your network. And yeah sorry, been a long day for me, starting to repeat myself and shit.

>management telling you to do shit that isn't your job
>have the shelf stockers and the janitors working in the fucking freezers doing picks
>management delete security camera footage of another employee knocking shit over out of anger at me
>having me clean the shit up they knocked over
>putting 12 foot tall pallets that are literally collapsing on the floor where customers are in a high traffic area
>the women never do their fucking job and stand around talking all night and then at the end of the night all men have to go "help the girls finish up"
>even when "helping them" they are still yaking on a few isles over.

From someone who worked at Walmart, it really isn't that hard. Show a little bit of enthusiasm, ambition, and intelligence and you'll have a pretty easy time. I recommend a smaller store if possible, less stressful that way and honestly, don't be an unloader or a cashier if you can avoid it: be a salesfloor if at all possible.

Really good sometimes.

Anyways, no worries Bro. I now how it can be sometimes. My whole family works at Walmart and I grew up thinking "Yeah no fucking way I'm going to be this miserable."

Also forgot to mention: I start out at $11.50 an hour at walmart compared to Big lots at only $8.00/hr

retail isn't THAT hard. i mean, you can pull stocking shifts that can be a little tough. however, early, late, odd hours mean you don't need to deal with a ton of people.
here's my experience:
>you won't get fired unless you steal/sexually harass/be a blatant racist.
>it's the same shit, every day, every year. i.e., seasonal items will come in at a specific times, taking inventory will happen at the same time, you generally deal with the same people on a weekly/monthly basis, etc.
>depending on where you work, you WILL gather more knowledge about specific products through customer talk and general know-how.
>it's more relaxed than an office job, but you will NEVER get office money. You'll get your small, .001% raise a year, maybe move to a managerial position if you have it in you, and MAYBE move up from there - but that's a big maybe.
>your manager will ALWAYS be a dick. i don't know why, but every retail position i've ever had (save for one) had an asshole manager. they make the job that much harder. however, as i mentioned above, unless you steal, sexually harass, or be a blatant racist they can't fire you... they can just make your job a living hell.
conclusion: if you like dealing with people in your community, don't mind making a low income/living wage, and can handle monotony, you'll do fine. it's why it's a good gig for young people and retirees - they don't give a fuck.

you tried

It's good training socially. I think of my time in retail as "retail school".

Just be ready to face a unnatrual seemingly high level of rejection. You'd think people who walk into shops want to be helped in buying stuff... you'd be wrong... people are fucking white, goddamnit they're weird

Any companies in CA?

are you me?
