Everyone tries to fit in with other people who look alike and share the same interests, but when you have no personality whatsoever you resort to the "styles". Furries and pony-fags are not different: they want to belong somewhere, apparently there's a rather large group of people who share the same interests for MLP, Sonic or whatever so they go out of their way to show they fit into the style, not realizing how obviously unnatural that is.

I think that the fedora is simply a fashion accessory that is tied with what's supposed to be a "manly" article of clothing. Many think that by simply wearing a fedora you become classy and automatically step above the "average class", this turning from a boy to a man.
With Sonic the point is different a slightly more complicated: Sonic, and other characters from the Nintendo franchise such as Mario and Megaman, is a very 2d, linear and colorful figure. The games themselves are very loud, ripetitive and have some sort of patterns that somehow resonate with some intricate triggers that enchant autistic people.
