In other words, you learn by reading something and then doing it. Doing it is the key - keep doing it until you're good at it.

There are thousands of programming languages, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. That said, there's only a few dozen that are commonly used.

Want to write phone apps? Find some tutorials on Android or iOS development.

You want to write web apps or game? Learn Javascript. Just bear in mind most languages are less retarded.

You a mathy kind of guy? Try Haskell. Or if you're the engineering kind of mathy guy, try Fortran.

Want to write Windows apps? C#. Just download Visual Studio (it's free) and watch some tutorials. For UNIX, you'd want C, C++, Python, or Perl.

That's just scratching the surface, mind you. I like Scheme personally, but I dunno if I'd recommend it as a first language.

I work on cars for fun, OP.
It's hot, tough work. But at the end of the day, when you finally get that old thing running for cheap, you can stand back and admire your hard work and the time you put into it. Plus if you're doing it outside, you tan, and because of it actually being a physical activity, you may even gain some muscle.

It's a really relaxing thing to get into. It gets expensive pretty quick, so that's how you learn about fixing them. It's usually a case of buy to repair.

Look for a Mamod engine or something. If it interests you, it's cheap enough to not break the bank if you don't like it that much.
