I don't understand if those things were actually alive and saying shit or if the guys eating them were hallucinating while having nostalgia. Do those things even feel pain because I heard no screams when Randy or Mackey ate them?

My thinking is they are a metaphor for the older generation. Remember when everything wasn't a reboot? Remember this and that. Weren't things better then? When the reality is it's the same as it's always been, just a new year and new skin. A lot of layers in this joke, that's my understanding. I noticed an user talk about how Mackey etc, kept them in mason jars and hidden in the furniture, much like smokers with recreational or illegal marijuana, and how that affects society. Problem is people are stuck in the past and aren't enjoying the possibilities of what the now can bring because they simply refuse to adapt.

More so to do with how everything has to be PC and cant be funny at anyones expense.
Going back to a simpler time when saying 1 normal word, wouldnt offend someone.
Thats why they hide it, because if they were caught with them, they would be anti PC and would be the devil and would be publicly destroyed

Oh right, they hide it from the kids and treat it like a taboo of sorts to eat them. But them sell them openly at Whole Foods, though?

Yes, that makes it clearer, I should have added that was my most basic understanding after seeing the episode once.
It hasn't been revealed where the member berries come from yet, (I think).
Since whole foods is PC, I don't think they would sell the berries. Because the whole taboo thing.
