My desk is surprisingly similar to yours, OP. I have the exact same mouse and a small CRT TV with a built-in VHS player. I don't have a camera or even a smartphone to take a picture, but I'll briefly describe.

From left to right: a mid-tower PC, desk lamp, keyboard, mouse on a Skullgirls mousepad, 24 inch curved monitor, speakers, TV, arcade fightstick, microphone, and a shit ton of DVDs, VHSs, and books.

Debian is sort of tough for me to recommend to a beginner. A lot packages are out of date so things like steam and certain window mangers might be a pain to install at first. There are things like backports, which are basically just packages ported back from the testing branch to the stable branch, but if your going to backport everything whats the point of running Debian(no seriously can someone answer this is what really bugged me when I tried Debian)? My personal favorite distro is fedora because it's pretty much always up to date, works well out of the box, and also has a fairly large number of packages available with DNF(It's Fedora package manager, which in simplest terms is kind of like app store but in the terminal). If you really want the easiest way to get into Linux you can always try Ubuntu though it does shrink your E-peen.

Arch isn't even close. Arch has a command line utility to help you install a precompiled kernel via pacstrap. With LFS, you're compiling the kernel from source using make, g++, patch, etc, and deploying the binaries you compiled to a partition. I use LFS on my desktop, but it took time to get here. If you're looking for a very clean slate with very little bloat installed, Arch does just fine. LFS just takes that so many steps further and makes you compile every binary you want whereas Arch doesn't go that far.

In what regard is it not as viable (comparatively speaking) or feasible? I get that you're not against it, but I suspect you're understating or misunderstanding Linux's capabilities in today's society.

The benefit I got out of it was a manual source code review of every single binary on the system. It's a security scrutiny. There will also be very slight improvements in memory/CPU usage, but it's negligible and you shouldn't install LFS if that small gain is your motivator. It won't be worth it.

Oh, yeah, definitely. It hasn't seen widespread adoption in terms of end users at home and in an enterprise environment. But, that doesn't make it less feasible or realistic. I've worked at a couple of dev shops that were entirely linux-based, both on the code repository and on the devs' computers. It's not widespread and it's definitely easier for most companies to see Microsoft and be like "why go through the hassle?"

Gaming's different. Linux isn't quite there yet, if it'll ever get there. I virtualize a Windows 7 image and use VT-d to passthrough a GPU so I still get max frames even with Windows being a virtualized OS under Linux. But with that setup, I can ensure that I control all of the traffic in and out of the Windows box and I assure myself that I don't expose myself to the plethora of Windows issues if it were my main OS.

I think some 98% of the market share with respect to the home environment is not on Windows, so yeah, there hasn't been widespread adoption by any means. But easily more than half of the servers, firewalls, switches, routers, etc. all run Linux. Not to mention that Android is running Linux under the hood.

Yeah, by no means do I expect the average gamer to dual boot or virtualize Windows for the sake of running something they're less familiar with. But it's still a misnomer to say that Windows/OS X is best without fully understanding the pros and cons.

Windows Server 2012 R2 is unfortunately a thing. It stems back to those companies that want Microsoft products because "it just works." They've got AD, MSSQL, Exchange, etc. and those services are more natively integrated on 2012 R2 than Redhat/CentOS. All of that functionality can be accomplished with less overhead, more granular control, and more reliability on a Linux server, but it's not Microsoft. So people use Windows servers for the same reason that they'll use Windows on their desktops.

A real world example: imagine trying to write a paper on top of your textbook. It would make more sense to spread your stuff out on a bigger desk (more monitors) and be able to read from the book while writing/without having to move the paper.
