I see. It's sort of a classic, it was important for anime overall, the industry was dying and NGE wasn't just successful, it was also creative and motivated other directors to use their craziest ideas.

It can be hard to get into and as Yuuko said, it has a lot of flaws, but once you get to the movie, finish the story and think about what you just watched it's very rewarding.

It's a story about loneliness and each character feels it in a different way. They all have their mental issues too.
