Code Geass. Yea it has mech, but the story was pretty cool. It has plenty of unexpected twists, and the characters aren't plain.

I know you said no mechs, but have you seen Neon Genesis Evangelion? It's a great show and the characters have a lot of story to them, the End of Evangelion movies is really good too (DONT WATCH THE NEW MOVIES, unless you want to, theyre not very good)
