Eh, I'd say pretty much so. What we had in mind whenever we first came about in spreading the word was to show others that the internet should be free to use without any censorship or ways to limit itself from others to use. Now it's become nothing more than a joke that everybody uses to make fun of, and I can understand why they would do so. The people that you see now that say they're Anonymous or part of it don't even know what it stands for or why it was created in the first place. They use it to either make themselves look threatening over the internet by proclaiming that they can hack whoever whenever they feel like it or by just trolling others into thinking that they are part of Anonymous. It's become nothing more than a joke now to everybody that was once in it and to others that are becoming a part of it.

Wow that's pretty sad. Such an important collective for society still, completely squashed in the information war. I guess the governments won.

It would seem like that at first glance, and it really does seem like the government has won. There is barely anybody now that was originally part of the movement that actually knows what is going on and why they joined it in the first place. It's sad really, but there's nothing that we can do about it since it seems the longer Anonymous is around, the more it's name and what it stood for is forgotten and replaced by nothing but a meme that's relevant to society at this point in time.

In both of these documentaries, it seems like they directly asked that question. They answered pretty clearly about why Anonymous decided to get serious instead of just fucking with people. There were comments about how you have to transcend the laws in place in the name of righteousness. Others spoke about how the freedom to criticize the powers that be is being taken in parts of the world.
