He couldn't do another season cause he was filming GOTG at the same time TWD was filming. He wanted to stay on the show but couldn't. The original plan Kirkman had was for him to join Rick's group and be a regular
on the show but the timing was just bad for both included.

In hindsight, he made the right choice cause he made tons more money doing that one film than he would have filming multiple seasons of TWD. AMC is notorious for being quite cheap when it comes to it's actors.
