When I was in middle school, I read a collection of sci-fi stories that had something like this in it.

The big schtick was that by coming to understand the alien language which required you to understand how the symbols influenced themselves, the woman linguist could see back and forth in time, but couldn't do anything about it. Not as in some final destination thing, more dr. manhattanesque. the book's structure reflects this, with her seeing her daughter die in a rock climbing accident and stuff like that. The aliens leave with the only information being given about advanced technologies being something that gets figured out like a week later on our own.

I summarized it pretty poorly, but I just saw the alien writing and it reminded me of it. Thought it might be a cheeky reference/nod. probably not though.
