according to something i read a long ass time ago, there was more to the story that got cut, including the cause of the loop and the duration.
it was something like he got cursed by an ex-lover for being a jackass and after some absurdly long period of time in the loop, more than 10 years, but probably closer to 40, the curse either ended or he met the criteria to end it by becoming a decent person. i don't really remember, but that's the general idea

Remember when she's stays up with him to see if he disappears? Then he reveals, its only when he finally falls asleep (or dies) that he truly resets.
It shows that by the end of the movie, he stopped caring about Rita, and more about //himself//.
That's what broke the time loop. He finally didn't focus on Rita, but Rita rather came to him naturally and organically, and him finally learning to become a better person (from saving everyone in town, when he really didn't have to at all, even with that knowledge).
TL;dr he achieved Nirvana and the universe granted him a chance with Rita again, outside the time loop.
