It's still a great movie. I think if ot had been named Once Upon a Time in Mexico, and known formally as part of the Once Upon a Time trilogy, it would have changed the perception of the public and be better regarded.

I like PTA, but Sydney is very average. It's charming because you can see the seeds of his style being planted (steadicam shots) but overall the film is not great. There is a huge quality gap between that and Boogie Nights. I give him the benefit of the doubt because it's hard enough getting your first film made, let alone when you're style is Altman-esque with ensemble casts.
Everything post-sydney is great though.
