Letters from Iwo Jima was about a jap fighting Americans and Americans liked the film, but movie was about a battle that America won and focused on one character such that it felt kind of tragic. You weren't supposed to be rooting for the Japs to win. It wasn't some hoeroic yarn about the underdog winning like M&C was.
