Precisely. The point of that final scene is that it is so meticulously planned, and so well shot. It's like a "Schrödinger's cat" of a scene where it can be viewed as both. Chase used incredible editing and storytelling methods to tell the tale of both:

The build up of tension and clues hidden throughout the season point to his demise from a very surface level.
