You don't fucking rotoscope a motion capture piece, idiot. In this case, you have the 3D model of Smaug rigged to be able to read the data captured on Cumberbatch's face (lips, eyes, etc). Then you will obviously tweak when needed because the technology isn't perfect. Or just scrap the data and do it manually, using the motion capture now as reference.

Rotoscoping has some different processes, but the vfx process involves taking a matte of an element and extracting it onto a different background, more often than not when green screen isn't available and you need the actor placed somewhere else. So no, they didn't fucking rotoscope Cumberbatch directly into the movies.
