South Park is going in the opposite direction. The over-the-top elements are becoming more tame. The characters were more grounded. Cartman actually feels like a fat kid and not a sociopath. The metaphor between social media and suicide is something Seinfeld might have done if it came out today.

It's different but I don't think it's bad because it's a little bit more ambitious. The Simpsons became a children's show.

This is the problem, honestly. And it's not just nostalgia goggles. You can watch any episode from seasons 5-8 and it's still legitimately funny. Without looking it up, I don't really know when the re-watchability factor went down, but my first guess would be sometime soon after the Imaginationland trilogy. I thought last season was pretty bad on the whole, but the season before that had the Handicar and Cock Magic episodes, which I really enjoyed because they were just self-contained stories for the most part.

It's only an effective method if South Park is the only thing someone watches. In my opinion South Park is awful now, but I still enjoy the older seasons. But I'm constantly watching new movies and shows, and listening to new music. I'm personally not "jaded" about anything else. They're so smug that they put all the blame on the viewer and not their declining ability to write a show. If you exclusively need to use the weekly news as a crutch, you're a bad writer and a lazy comedian.
