Thread for those who've been watching cinema seriously for 5+ years and have advanced past capeshit, mainstream movies and the same old flicks.
Don't be offended, this is not meant to be pretentious, its just some of us have moved past IMDb-core, indie flicks and the latest hyped blockbuster and have more developed tastes. Do not troll or derail the thread with off-topic discussion.

Irreversible, Enter the Void and I Stand Alone are objectively good movies. you probably have a bias against "shocking" cinema
Evan Flores
There are some patrician titles and the rest are midlevel even though it's copypasta. You should watch them.
Austin Kelly
>un homme qui dort literally me
Josiah Perez
Irreversible and Enter the Void were both film-school level trash. Haven't seen I stand alone, but Love was just as pretentious and trashy as what I've come to expect from that adolescently trapped boy
Asher Mitchell
>"shocking cinema"
just realized you trolled that response out of me. Fuck.
William Ward
>Tokyo Tribe Genuinely worse than capeshit.
Ryder Bell
>film-school level >adolescently
as predicted, you do have a bias juvenile doesn't mean bad
i'm not trolling. that's how most people would describe his cinema, that's how noé himself describes his dialetics. his cinema is pulpy and juvenile and goes for shock value. he's edgy as fuck and he knows it
Michael Davis
Don Hertzfeldt is a legitimate and genuine artist. Got to hang with him at Sundance last year after the World of Tomorrow screening.
Asher Ortiz
So... what's your point? It's OK because the director admits he's trite?
Blake Young
post your most ancient kinography, i nominate Mosquinha (1890) La vague (1891)
Ian Richardson
On a filmmaking level his films are adolescent and trashy, not in terms of content. His ideas and style are the kind of stuff the guy who makes every frame a painting would put out - straight-up textbook and utterly unchallenging.
>Kurosawa, , Kubrick, Lynch, Villenueve, Welles the list goes on!
The hallmarks of the tasteless and the uninitiated. It's okay if you're just getting into the medium, but there are some (even here, on a so called ''film'' board) that actually believe they are cultured or have a snippet of taste because they like these directors, when in actuality they are nothing more than embarrassing cringeworthy copy/paste babbies with no opinion on the medium they claim to love whatsoever.
For a cinephile like myself, it is truly disgusting to watch, and the main reason I, and many others, steer far away from this pit of despair and depravity.
Nicholas Harris
my point is you couldn't provide an objective assessment of his art even if your life were in the line because you have a bias against his methods and probably has a calcified view of what "high art" ought to be
Caleb Howard
No shit I have a biased view. You have a biased view too judging his films like you are doing right now, or do you seriously believe objective film taste exists, much less that you yourself are objective?
Christopher Cook
His art is his art. No one is calling it meritless or "bad". When you step into the realm of cinematic commentary with your "art", however, you open yourself up to criticism on a foundational level. All of Noe's films attempt to critique the medium, and in doing so his shortsightedness and basic ideas prevent his art from maintaining any legitimacy.
Brandon Jones
It's the reason why Apichatpong Weerasethakul and David Lynch are more capable filmmakers than people like Nicolas Winding Refn and Gaspar Noe.
Jordan Brown
What did it feel like when you realized all your favorite films were reactions to the works of the people you listed above?
Luis Jackson
i'm not claiming to be an 100% objective spectator, however I try to take his movies as they are. "juvenile", "trashy" and "film-school level" are empty signifiers. it's like criticizing a Tarantino flick for being too adolescent
>No one is calling it meritless or "bad" have you even read this thread?
>When you step into the realm of cinematic commentary with your "art", however, you open yourself up to criticism on a foundational level. the criticisms provided so far are surface level and tell more about yourselves than the artist being discussed
Jaxson Sanchez
>Villenueve and why would you include him in there? a fine filmmaker no doubt, but none of his films will be called back upon 10 years ago
Jace Miller
You pretentious little shit, get fuck out of my board.
Jaxon Garcia
Can anyone recommend me some truly scary films? The only director that have ever succeeded in spooking me is Lynch.
I hear the same mainstream recs over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over again so please only obscure films. The last i watched that i got recommended and was good was Cure from 1997
Dylan Rodriguez

This \/ is a troll post.
I can't give you any recommendations myself. There are countless numbers of legitimately terrifying moments in cinema throughout the ages, but the vast majority are from unfrightening films.
John Thomas
lads... i think i can feel something thick and creamey moving down...
Lincoln Lopez
That's how he describes his films, you've said as much yourself. They aren't empty signifiers, they're necessary general attributes that are necessary to discussion considering I don't remember all the details of his works nor do I need to.
At this point you still haven't clarified your point, you haven't even really made one.
His films are edgy, trashy, pulpy and lack depth. You haven't argued about his films at all so far, all you've done is be pedantic and ramble abput semantics you don't even understand in a meaningless adolescent effort to be objective while tossing all meaning in film discussion out the window.
Evan Turner
Tarantino respects where his ideas come from. He doesn't try to push the medium forward on his juvenile and trashy ideas. Gaspar Noe is Iñárritu but with less of a hard on for religious collective ideas and not a sell-out
Christopher Jones
I have watched both noroi and blair witch project, good films that come more close to being genuinely terrifying than most horror films. But i feel that there was something missing in both to make the horror go all the way for me personally.
Robert Nelson
I wish I could suspend my disbelief to the level Blair Witch requires for it to be scary. It's truly a brilliant work, but I derive zero pleasure from watching it. I've never made it all the way through in one sitting.
Asher Evans

Joshua White
I've watched probably hundreds of horror movies back when I was a teenager, and I must tell you that maybe the thing you're looking for doesn't exist Most people don't really get scared after certain age. I mean, they DO get scared but I think it has more to do with the mindset they carry into their viewing experiences than the movie itself. I usually enjoy horror because of its oddness; when coupled with good directing/writing/etc it makes for a fine experience. Getting legitimately terrified with movies is very very rare, in my opinion.
