People are so obsessed with creating the 'perfect life' and this includes finding a spouse and getting married. It's become a game. People will happily (and almost unknowingly) pretend to be the person that their significant other wants them to be. It's easy to keep up at the start, and it's fun because you're in love. But eventually your true self is going to show through.

Gone Girl is, at it's core, the story of why every marriage fails. It's just presented as a satire. It's a completely insane, over-the-top example of why more than 50% of marriages fail. It takes this reason and it amplifies it to a crazy ridiculous degree, and we end up with a wild comedy disguised as a thriller.
