Actually the book is based on the movie The Driver (1978) which was itself based on Pierre Melville's Le Samourai (1967) which also heavily inspired Jim Jarmusch's Ghost Dog (obviously) and The Limits Of Control (less obviously).
So, the long answer to OP's question is: No, fuck you, Le Samourai is better.
