It could be that one microphone on each person was set-up to record for the broadcast and the other was set-up for the PA in the debate hall. It seems a really weird way to set someone up, by using two microphones. Also, unless there were some serious post-production effects on one of the microphones, it wouldn't pick any more subtle sounds up without amplifying the speaking anyway.

I don't necessarily agree with this point of view but the reason either side will hate fence sitters is because if you care enough to pick a side, then you get frustrated if other people don't care. Politics comes down to the deepest, core values people have and if someone has opposite or different values as you, you tend not to like them. There's also the fact that fence sitters often appear to be egotistical in that they seem to think they are "above it all", and better than the others who choose sides.
