We really don't have the full story in this one movie; there are hints that Rey is not a stranger to combat. For example, she overpowers three grown men right in the beginning of the movie. Unlike A New Hope, The Force Awakens was written with the sequels in mind, so we won't know until later.

If Rey was a Mary Sue, she wouldn't have been captured, wouldn't have run away from her destiny as the inheritor of Luke's saber, wouldn't have gotten knocked out in the first place, etc. etc. Rey shows all kinds of weakness in this film, up until this fight, where she actually starts to believe in herself and that's what helps her win. This stuff didn't really irritate me as much as it irritates Cred Forums, but it was hard not to notice. Also focusing on just a few characters against a threat(like the OT) instead of focusing on characters and political machinations in the galaxy(prequels) was a good choice.
