Seasons 1 and 2 were pretty great, at least in my opinion.

I don't care which season is your favorite, but 6 is indisputably the worst.

They had no plan for the series and just coasted on the same formula as the previous writers until it ended (new big bad, gets close to dexter, dexter has to catch them and kill them in the finale while avoiding detection).
The ending was their attempt at a The Shield type fate-worse-than-death ending but was hamfisted because it didn't have 7 seasons leading up to that moment like The Shield did and must have been thrown up as an idea in the writer's room at the last moment.

Season 5 wasn't so bad. Sure Lumen was an annoying cunt but Sherlock Holmes was one of the better big bads.

They definitely took it a season at a time, but I think the ending we got was pretty predictable given the events leading up to it. There was no happy endgame once deb wanted to bang dexter and then found out the truth. Deb dying, dexter dying, either or both in prison etc. There was no believable way they could both live on happily ever after.

They didnt stop after season 2.

Seasons 1-3 are great. Season 4 had so many fucking copout things just to lead up to MUH TWIST ENDING. Season 5 is fucking dogshit boring, it's like Miguel 2.0 but with no personality just MUH REVENGE. Season 6 is meh, the religion aspect is alright but once it starts getting into Looney Tunes territory with the mural of Dexter's demon face (seriously this shit happened in Season 2 as well and it was corny as fuck). I'm hazy on Season 7 but I think that was the one with the Ukranian mob? Decent season but it's just so anticlimactic. Season 8 is a fucking cesspool of shit. No show comes close to the cliff dropoff of quality than Dexter Season 8. Plotholes out the ass, random character that knows all about Dexter for no reason, characters built up just to be killed in retarded ways, the main plot with Hannah that nobody gave a shit about. Just fucking atrocious.

I would recommend watching Seasons 1-4, skip 5 completely as it's almost all filler, maybe watch a recap thing of Season 6 then watch the finale, then watch all of Season 7. Forget Season 8 even exists.
