Plinkett addressed the issue of convenient plot devices as well.

He brought up the question of why so little of events between ROTJ and TFA were addressed, like why Han returned to smuggling, how Kylo was seduced to the Dark Side, and how the New Order amassed an army and built a superweapon under the nose of the New Republic.

He is well aware of the Finn's sudden change of heart in beginning of TFA and suggested in an idea for a rewritten plot that there should be a reason with emotional impact for it to happen (where the Starkiller was actually a Republic superweapon stolen by Imperial remnants and used to inflict indiscriminate destruction, making Finn delusion of his allegiance to the Empire).

As for Rey, there could be a lot of reasons she's stuck on that sandpit. She's pretty much a blank slate with a lot of holes needed to fill out. Plinkett also addressed the fact that she's just a superficial, watered down copy of Luke in TFA with room for improvement.

People started abandoning the new Doctor Who, because it kept pulling that shit, introducing some great mystery, constantly hinting at it, and then either never revealing it, revealing something unfulfilling/bullshit or revealing it, only to then tie in 5 new mysteries to keep pulling you along.

Now they want to translate these kinds of unfinished story telling methods where basic character motivations and backgrounds only start making sense 5 years later onto the silver screen.
