We all choose media that most aligns with our taste. The bias that you take on may be a mixture of genetic/somatic bias with experience for flavoring and emotional temperament but essentially it can be boiled down to that usually.

Producers and execs know that you will never be able to reach every demographic but if you can reach a large enough demographic and pander or affirm their view you will have a dedicated and stable ratings/viewership. Trying to reach out to everyone makes for an unstable ratings/viewership because you will never be certain as to whether you can attract one group which directly opposes the views of the other whilst simultaneously trying to promote the views of the other group in the scenario. If every week, the show flip-flopped between making fun of Hillary then the next going after Trump people would not tune in because no one likes to see their political ideology belittled and how can they support a show which tries to play both sides.

Doubtful. A Trump presidency would be a ratings bonanza for them.

The problem is that Colbert is doing that same show that John Oliver, Trevor Noah, Seth Meyers, Sam Bee, and (until recently) Larry Wilmore are doing. Peachy liberal late night TV is a niche area but market is diverse nonetheless. When Jon Stewart was racking up Emmys and became a *cable* success, Colbert and Bill Maher were the only other liberal hosts on the air and all three were offering a different experience. The guys I listed above (including CBS Colbert) just emulating what Jon Stewart used to do.
