I just rewatched the 70's version again. That one has a much more playful, almost campy tone - you don't really question the internal logic all that much.

Because the show has a much more serious tone, I was constantly thinking about the technology. Some as silly as the guns: how do they differentiate between a host and a guest? Does it look for a heat signature (like the movie), or does it use something more sophisticated? Ed Harris still got hit with something (assuming he's human) because the bullets generated a puff of smoke. Do the host have some sort of non lethal round, and they can only target the chest? That would explain why Teddy couldn't cap Ed Harris in the head. What happens when a guest tries to shoot a bullet through a host when there's another guest standing behind it?

Didn't you listen to the dialogue? They've been working on this shit for at least more than 30 years. And I say "at least" because the "last critical failure was 30 years ago" which implies there are long stretches in between update failures which implies this shit has been going on for much longer than 30 years. They probably started out with a small town with a couple of story lines written by one guy. Then with increasing demand expanded on the existing story lines and eventually ended up with a small region. They are reusing the same story lines they've been using for many years. It's not too hard to keep writing new ones if you can just make every host do whatever you want. The dad for example used to be a teacher, then a sheriff etc.

that's what I don't get. There are synths that get destroyed every single day just because of regular story lines that happen. Even if the park is populated by peaceful guests that never attack any of the synths, their bandits and sheriffs destroy a good amount of them each day. I mean I'm not a robotics expert but I assume that their maintenance costs must be enormous. At this point it would be better to just cut out full "immersion" and don't make the synths destructible at all and just use paint-ball bullets to which they react as if they were real bullets. Cost of running the park would go down massively and even people who aren't super rich could now afford to actually get a trip to this place.
