Well, you're not wrong in that- it didnt feel as though he was trying to understand much or be objective like usual. He was simply marveling at the ridiculousness, exposing some of the sordid details, and having a laugh. His final monologue, in which he usually succinctly wraps things up, felt out of place. It just felt like one of his typical docs, which was elevated by the meta playacting stuff, but not a really poignant, feature film. That's ok though, it's a fun watch just the same.
