I'm just speaking to the aspects that made it go shit. The first 2 seasons are as entertaining as anything I've ever seen. It lost steam and ideas after that and crashed hard. Of course it has great qualities, but lost direction and stumbled around before just going on a killing spree for nothin more than dramatic effect. It flickered out into a whimper, which is why, in its totality, it's not a great show.

S6 death counts were due to the fact that it was 21 episodes, needing closure and the completion of character arcs.

The show managed to stay fresh for 83 episodes without resorting to and relying on the typical mafia cliches. Only once do the families go to war with each other, there are very few "who's the rat?" scenarios, etc. Characters are varied and well-written. All the main characters have great arcs and a lot of personality and even evoke sympathy - in a show about a sociopathic mafiosa.

The human condition distilled into show form. The best drama ever made, and I don't see anything topping it any time soon.
