There's no background, they have just added tons of CGI effects. I know it's action, but it looks extremely uncanny. An instant immersion-breaker.

There are backgrounds in both shots, just not viewable in those particular frames.

It is. Most of the dialogue is improvised, and therefore comes off as very genuine. The shots have an ethereal floating perspective to them.

And as well shot as synecdoche is, Malick is in a league of his own.

Kaufman is one of the few who writes for the image above all. Gondry and himself have done wonders with his material. It's not his fault Spike Jonze is a hack. Watch more films and study screenwriting.
