Power Rangers nearly beat Star Wars in toy sales in 1999. Considering this was well past PR's prime (1993 - 95), and it was the year of the first new Star Wars movie in 16 years, I'd say this is one source that proves the property is much more successful than people give it credit for.

I think it depends a lot on who they get to be the stunt-men behind the masks.

It feels a lot like they're trying to make Power Rangers a serious thing now, instead of the goof-ball crap it was back in the day. If they're going to make that work it needs to rival the Matrix (at least) in terms of hand-to-hand combat. If it could pull off The Raid without being as bloody it might also be a good way to go.
