This is a thread for those of us who have been watching cinema seriously for over 5 years and have seen over 1000 films. Don't be offended; some of us have simply moved past imdb-core, capeshit, and the same old indie flicks. Do not derail the thread with trolling or off-topic discussion.

Without further adieu, I wish a warm welcome to my fellow cinephiles. Here are some discussion points to get our thread started:

>What have you been watching recently?

>What is your opinion on the current state of American and world cinema?

I watched Deer Hunter today and I must say, I was blown away. A revolutionary look at war and a well-deserved award winner.

I got into film seriously in 1997 when I saw Gummo, so about 20 years ago (I'm 32). I immediately watched everything Korine recommended: Herzog, Fassbinder, Cassavetes, Von Trier, Clarke, etc. I feel like that gave me an extremely solid foundation of filmmakers to grow up on.

The current state is fine, but the good stuff is more few and far between (imo) as it seems like as the tools for filmmaking become more accessible, filmmakers are becoming less daring, less willing to push the envelope. I'm still waiting on the next true Kids in spite of all the trash that is constantly being branded as it every few years.

This year I really liked The Witch and Hunt for the Wilderpeople, I haven't watched very many "indie" films in the past couple years, they've lost a lot of punch.

For another Kids you would need another grimey NYC (Peep shows on 42nd) . Maybe if LC shot in Mumbai?

>filmmakers are becoming less daring, less willing to push the envelope
>liked Hunt for the Wilder People

Train to Busan was decent. Been really studying a lot of Micheal Mann.

Need more R rated films.

>all the trash that is constantly being branded as next Kids
I think the reason for that is because Kids itself is trash.

I wasn't saying all I like is provocative and edgy stuff, I was trying not to write a huge blog post. I was just making a random point about cinema today then adding what I enjoyed.

Who
>Godard

Here?

faggot

>Without further adieu
Well adieu to you too, don't come back.

I've been watching since the 1970s and have around 20k movies under my belt. All it has done is made me bitter. Everything seems more amateurish now. Time is a good filter of course and there was lots of shit I waded through in each decade to find gems. I'm just more harsh towards the shit and social propaganda now. Hollywood needs an enema.

The last film I saw that made me sit up and pay attention was "13 Tzameti" in original language without subtitles. I don't even speak French/Georgian and even without knowing the language I was still on the edge of my seat. It was shot well enough that everything going on could be inferred even without sound.

kek

Thank you, was about to post this

New pasta?

why don't you fuck off?

kek

>13 Tzameti
This movie is actually pretty great. Could rec some other recent movies you've enjoyed?

Yeah, that was such a unique moment in time that nothing made today will ever compare to Kids. It's a shame Clark didn't make more in his prime. He is on one of the latest Bret Easton Ellis podcasts, it's pretty good.

Stfu you dont know shit about film. Do you even know who directed Seven Samurai and Ikiru? No you probably don't. Well, he's a man called Akira Kurosawa and I don't expect you to know who he is because you're a girl and you probably don't even watch movies that came out before 2000. You love movies? I doubt it bitch, you love flicks. Shit like Adam Sandler and Kevin Hart is what you watch. What do I watch? I watch real films. Films that involve precise cinematography. Films that are worthy enough to be played at the most honorable theater in the world. I bet you don't even know of any Japanese movies. And the Ring doesn't count. Why? Because it just doesn't. Horror movies are bad. They can't be good. Unless it's The Thing. Carpenter is a master director. Have you seen Escape from New York? No of course not. Have you played Metal Gear Solid? Probably not because you're a girl and spend all your time on facebook talking to douchebags instead of experiencing the great mind that Hideo Kojima has to offer. Anyway back to films. Seven Samurai is the greatest film ever made, and it's been remade by America into movies that are great but not as good as Seven Samurai. Have you seen the Magnificent Seven? And not the one with Denzel Washington (although he's a good actor but too bad he's a nigger) and that pathetic excuse of an actor Chris Pratt. I'm talking about the original 1960 film with Steve McQueen. Yeah no of course you haven't seen it. I bet you have never even seen a Western before anyway. And Back to the Future 3 doesn't count because it's shit. Only Back to the Future and the 2015 part of Back to the Future 2 are good.
So go fuck yourself you whore. You don't know shit about true films. Come back when you've completed the full East Asian kinography canon. And then go watch Das Boot. Inception is not a mind bending movie. 2001: A Space Odyssey is. But don't bother with that, it's too smart for you. Now suck my dick k?

>Kojima shit
>film snob

Literally pick one and only one

7.5/10 I chuckled

kek

Being this new.

I guess you're more of the type that likes the USA remake of it with Jason Statham. That one is utter shit. Talk about producers turning something into shit even with it having the same director.

>recent

That's difficult.

Memento
Timecrimes
Hunter Prey (don't look it up in any way, just watch it; sci-fi)

Just watched Vous ne recevez pas à amener des amis. Fantastic little French film, very playful imagery. I don't speak French but I'm told the dialogue is really cut and loose too, almost like its being casually improvised. Feels like it was made in a lazy afternoon while clearly actually having a pretty considerable production value. Also very rewatchable, the director throws all of these little quirky shots in that get even better on repeat viewings.

MOTY

Who the fuck counts how many movies they've watched?

That actually sounds pretty terrible. Like every small production these days.

Hunter prey

I've seen this mentioned a few times, will give a watch now

Thanks for the recs user

Yea it is a shame he really shook things up downtown, wonder what he could have done with bigger britches. And yea i'll check that out.

Plebs, if you can count them you aren't doing it right

Anothrr Kids could be done very well if set in a north east suburb. With the heroin epidemic. It's sad that NYC doesn't have that vibe anymore it was truly the most perfect time for films.

Heroin influence would be too drab. LC made it a point to take misfits from the LES and drop them into this narrative that wasn't too far off. There is a hustle and bustle aspect not only because of the surrounding issues of the time period but the fact that most of these kids had interlocking minutia that was pretty interesting. They all hung out at Alleged Gallery, Supreme, SHUT and other spaces that are now cultural institutions that are either influencing dynamics or had prior ability to do so. It was a right time right place kind of thing.

>world cinema
>not interplanetary cinema
Why are you even here you IQlet troglodyte

Korrine made that film what it is though

So many teen movies try to do teenage dialog/behavior but come off wrong. Korrine was writing from what he knew/lived everyday, and it shows.

If you wanted to do a modern kids you need a teenage who actually living that kind of life to write the screenplay. Otherwise it comes off as false.

so you've been counting since childhood?

> /advanced/
>I watched Deer Hunter today
8/10 bait I dont think anyone noticed

Well really Larry did make that considering no one had the funds but him nor did anyone have any filmmaking experience prior. It was a dance of its parts. Everyone on an even keel within regards to respect , Larry was known to skate around at Washington Square Park with the kids even at 50 years old. Harmony also seals the deal himself and is quoted saying it would be impossible to make something like Kids again, especially in a atmosphere like these days I'd have to believe him .

Everyone noticed it you special snowflake.

Kids, and films of its breed, is really the least cinema can do. This quasi cinema verite style is plaguing cinema.
There are still, and has always been, films exactly like it.

>I got into film seriously in 1997 when I saw Gummo
That makes sense. Gummo is the kind of flick that can only impress bored teenagers with no perspective.

You really didn't make any actual points except that you were trying to insult someone you know nothing about. Good job, idiot.

And no, there have not been any films that achieved what Kids has in the last 20 years.

It's definitely not quasi and name two films exactly like it that are American.

what's wrong with cinema vérité?

I did a good job insulting you? Uh, I thought it was a safe assumption that if you're a teenager and Gummo sparked your interest in film, then you likely were completely ignorant of cinema outside of Hollywood blockbusters since all it did was popularize avant garde techniques from twenty years prior. So thanks, retarded asshole.

And no, I wasn't trying to make a point as much as I was presenting an observation that independent, art house, whatever you call it, cinema is completely dominated by this mode of filmmaking. And therefore I would not consider it "advance".

What did Kids achieve?

> Don't be offended; some of us have simply moved past imdb-core

>I watched Deer Hunter today and I must say

>Pushed 5 actors to stardom featured in more TV/Movies than you could even dream of putting down on your CV
> Cemented Harmony Korine as an avant garde who still makes cinema to this day
> Cemented Larry Clark even more post Nebraska
> Illuminated the LES cultural push of street skateboarding to the mass parallel to MTV/ MTV2 / Tony Hawk Pro Skateboarder /XGames that help user the saturation of the sport into the lexicon
>Also cemented the LES shops that put these kids on the map into fashion/ art lexicon by way of establishments like Supreme which has h ad its own foray in mainstream and underground since a year before Kids was premiered.
> Literally every kid cognizant of how to use a VHS pre 1999 snuck to see this movie like ravenous wolves . Most kids saw it, and you're sperging out on an Indonesian JAV porn server.

i've been watching cinema for over 25 years and seen over 10 films

AMA

anybody go to Larry Clark's recent gallery opening? it was okay. there was free beer and wine.

me

Johnathan!?

And? That only has to do with the legacy of the film, not the film itself. Why should it be celebrated that Korine and Clark are still working to this day? What did Kids present to the world in terms of filmmaking where we're suppose to be thankful that the two are continuing with their talents? From what I'm hearing, it sounds like it just a trend film and all it did was package the trendy culture of the day to larger audience of impressionable youths. There are a lot of films like that. I don't care about Skate culture.
>a lot of people wanted to see it
Who cares?
>sperging out
The thing about insults like this is that they say more about the users state of mind.

>Trendy
>Trend

Just exit the thread faggot.

after you, faggot

Kids is still more important than anything you've ever done so yea ...eat a dick faggot.

You guys like Winter Light?

Okay, a sudden end to the discussion, but I'll take it. I got nothing out of it other than more animosity towards Kids now that I know the people that champion it are assholes that can't rationalize past "Well, it was important for it it time and I liked it as an adolescent." Enjoy knowing you can't persuade anyone, shithead.
