Another thing they're missing is that sometimes studios make special deals with distributors to keep more of the ratio of box office during opening weekend, and then they decrease the ratio.

My film school professor. It makes sense since the studio only gets about half the gross, and then you also have to take marketing into account. It corrolates with Feig saying Ghostbusters needed 500 mil to make a low profit.

144 mil budget
144 x 3 = 432.
If the rumored 100 mil marketing budget is true that makes sony's investment 244mil.
Which makes the break even point 488.
So Ghostbusters is actually over the 3x rule of thumb.
The same will be true of any blockbuster with a big marketing budget.

It's not as simple as "half the budget is hurr for marketing", or "it needs to make two times it's budget to break even hurr"

The reason why marketing budgets are believed to be 2X or something of that nature is because they assume you need two times the money to promote a large budget film, which is not always the case. It all really depends on the film and situation. Some films survive just fine with minimal marketing, obviously not all. Again, it really depends on the picture.

There is no universal "break even point". Every picture is different. Every film has a different budget, different market, different set of expectations. To try and formulate some kind of "catch-all" formula as ridiculous as "2X the budget le marketing" is so fucking stupid.

There's merchandising, dvd/bluray sales, video on demand, syndication! Every one of you little shits seems to be so closeted in their views of what constitutes a commercially successful film that it is actually humorous rather.

But there is such a thing as a mathematical average, and we can make a tough rule of thumb based on that.

But they don't release them to the public, nor do they release co-financing details and profit shares and individual theater chain profit shares etc.

That's why the Sony leaks were so fascinating.

You'd see some shitty Seth Rogen film make 130 million bucks, and the studio made a clean profit of 75 million, and then you'd see American Hustle which cost like 40 million make 250 million dollars at the box office - and Sony's total profit was like 20 million dollars.
