When Darwin first published Origin of Species, the strongest opposition came from people who couldn't handle the idea that life in nature was basically a constant war for survival and procreation on ever level. The idea of love-dovey nature has been fairly common amongst sheltered people in urban areas whose primary contact with wilderness was through stories about talking animals.
