AMC renews Halt And Catch Fire for a fourth and final season

>final
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Pretty much since the beginning, AMC’s ‘80s-set computer industry drama series Halt And Catch Fire has failed to live to the ratings highs of Mad Men or Breaking Bad, and yet the network has continued to renew the series almost entirely because of its consistently positive reviews. Presumably, the Walking Dead family of shows is so successful that AMC can afford to stick with something like Halt And Catch Fire simply because it looks good and it keeps viewers happy. It’s a fine system, and the only downside is that AMC didn’t come up with it in time to save Rubicon.

Now, Variety is reporting that AMC has renewed Halt And Catch Fire once again, this time for a fourth and final season. This news comes just a day before the network is set to air the show’s two-part finale for season three, with AMC president Charlie Collier referring to the show as “a true passion project” and thanking the critics and fans “who have embraced this unique program.”

The fourth and final season will last 10 episodes, and it will presumably air next summer.

i hate season 3 Joe
Season 1 and 2 was best Joe

I'm really sad about this. This is one of the few shows that I actually like and now this wil end after four seasons.

Fuck.

If you like this show, stop watching at S03E08.

DO NOT WATCH THE FUCKING FINALE

season 3 was really fucking good, the best one by far

very underrated series, better than that overrated shit Mad Men

what the fuck is wrong with you? the last 2 episodes were the best part and totally unexpected

and it made sense

it ruined all the characters for me desu lad

>But I need 10 seasons of diluted nothing!

What's wrong with 4 seasons?

>A bunch of very good looking people when not busy with their complicated relationships invented the first portable computer, the first social network that turned into a eBay thing, the first anti-virus and now they're gonna invent the first web browser for public, and they are probably going to invent p2p file sharing. In spare time they code popular videogames.

Show's good, characters are good, but the story seems like some kind of IT fantasy show

the last 2 are the only watchable episodes because the characters actually do something. season 3 had a few really good things like the ryan arc but they were surrounded by a mire of arduous relationship drama punctuated by 80s references in an attempt to make it bearable. the mutiny arc was getting so stale and going nowhere except to show the staff doing 80's things.

they finally dropped the joe is a villan horseshit, cam finally grew the fuck up, and donna was finally called out for her shit. everyone is finally building something again instead of 8 episodes of strained marriages, father and son drama, and cam being petulant. it finally feels like season 1 again where something is actually happening.

REALLY hating this show now

this show is excellent, very underrated, the only thing that separates it from being télékino is you should be glad it gets a proper ending, literally no one is watching this show (including critics), it's like The Americans, probably just getting renewed because the head of the channel has a mancrush on Lee Pace or something

Well looks like this will be the fourth season in a row I don't watch.

lol

are you serious? the final 3 episodes of season 3 are like the best episodes of the entire show

this desu, hopefully more TV people will realize this over time. The Knick will go down in history as one of the GOAT tvkinos ever because it was only 2 seasons. Also look at The Leftovers, it's a hundred times better than LOST because Lindelof only had 30 episodes to work with instead of fuckin 90 or whatever.

don't forget that time they invented broadband internet connections in 1985 because they wanted to steal cable TV

this is the most accurate of opinions.

it made the characters likable again, which is pretty great.

explain specifically what you don't like.

I bet cam doesn't use deodorant

It just got rid of all the conflict and made everyone so damn correct.

Seriously, like, it's apparent what's going to happen in the next season now. cameron is going to get a divorce or tom is going to die, Gordon and Donna will stay separate while they still care for each other because Gordon's health will get worse and he will be in a rehab or something like that because he relapsed when he saw that his wife was getting some action.

Joe and Cameron will be together again. Boswoth will marry that firm executive, the girls will be okay, and their company will be headed by Joe with Gordon (formerly) in charge of the technical stuff while Cameron still develops games for a living.it's perfect and goes with what the show has done all aong. It has shock and awe, but it was all predictable.

Also, take my word on it, the last season is going to be like the first season except this time they will win, big time. This is where the writers will finally change what really happened (like, apple won in season 1, even when cameron had that idea first) this time, they will win. Everything will go the same way, they'll make Donna the scapegoat and get her kicked out of the firm and then Joe and Cameron wil come up with the idea and Gordon will be ill and shit and then they will debut it for free like Ryan wanted to and then it will get them ton of cash in the end while it becomes the most used thing ever. The end. You cna kind of already see it right now, what with Joe and Cameron meeting the printer guys at computex, whom they met earlier when they fleeced them out of their rooms and shrimps.

It's not that I hate the show, I'm just pissed that the writers laid all their cards on the table, especially when how well they handled season 2 with all it's sjw shit and managed not to bring any into season 3.

That's the appeal.

Wow, you didn't read the last episode right at all. On Cameron/Joe you're probably correct, but it will come with a lot of drama between Joe/Gordon because once again Joe's personal bullshit will bring down his company.

Donna will go full out antagonist and compete with our other mc's, it'll be an emotional bloodbath. She's already out since Cameron got rid of her. Did you not see the last hour?

And since these writers have a habit of upsetting status quo basically anything can happen. I doubt they'll boilerplate their last season, they're gonna go out with a bang.

re: this being a IT fantasy, it kind of is. All the tech is a nice extra but I don't really watch it for that, the characters are what's most interesting about this show. If you can get into that don't watch it.

I sort of agree with this user but also I find that you're right that they wrote the finale as if it was a series finale just in case too so. Yeah they did boilerplate it a little but that isn't a bad thing, the character progression felt natural and even then it as a story still wasn't as perfect as you're making it out to be.

Cameron maturing and making her wants more mature isn't a bad thing, which is more a reflection of youth and less about sjw-ness. The only reason we consider it social justice is because it tries to undermine the status quo. In reality women having agency doesn't mean anything necessarily because their world is shown that what we want doesn't always matter. Joe wants to create change, so does Cam in her own way and yet you can kind of tell she has wants that go against greater agenda, like family/love which is why she keeps getting drawn back in by joe and joe having humility is what makes him a better visionary and actually allows him to be happy and in his own moment in last episode. He kept thinking he had to make a thing to be happy, look back at season 1 where he torches his life because it doesn't match how he envisioned it when in reality he already had what he really wanted and coming around again is fighting for it.

Go back and watch. He was so fucked up that he couldn't see it. That is good story telling.

I agree with your criticism with Bos but honestly there is only so much story to tell and they already did with his meandering journey post-mid life crisis.

You could be right about gordon/donna but that is more or less a reflection on modern relationships and marriage/divorce because it seemed accurate in the way that even when people aren't together that they're still in eachothers lives.

I think it will show great change in people that we're seeing and it will end up in a different place than what we saw before..especially donna, I think she won't end up being the final boss.

never even heard of it, but it sounds like something that I might like.

more to add onto my point, the characters still have one last arc so you'll have joe entering his final path, gaining success but realizing he was right all along that what he really wanted was to do something great with people he cares about. So you'll get the gordon/cam stuff there too.

Cam's storyline will seem the most obvious but have more nuance from where she started. You can see a lot of the jobs biopic on her appearance/appearance of joe in this too in a way but they're the antijobs crew in a lot of ways, especially joe.

Gordon has come into his own and came a long way from being the nobody in the crowd that he started off at, being a drunk, buttoned up person that hates his life. His ideas along with joe have freed him to see what he can do as a person which means more than his personal relationships.

You'll see a reflection of gordon/donna with joe/cam most likely too, especially where we saw them in the beginning, I think joe will want the family he never got with his own.

It will be much better storytelling in the end then what you're thinking right now, so I would wait before passing final judgment.

Honestly I think they should drop Bos at this point. He's a great character and fun but his arc kind of ended, esp. since he's on the outs with Cameron now kind of. Just bring him back sometimes as a recurring guest, but forcing him into every episode just seems like a waste of character.

I'm
I'd forgotten that Cameron got rid of her, thanks.

Gordon is really a wild card right now in my eyes because of his illness and stuff and the fact is that the writers have just two things to do with him - thye can either make him sick in the first couple of episodes and then use him as a hail mary in the end or make him do all the work and give him a tragic end. they WILL include the personal bullshit but they won't let it escalate because then it would just be like the previous seasons.

And I doubt anything is going to happen with donna going all red on vc's that have never been introduced, the most I can see is her having a fued with bos and ending shit right there.

What i meant by SJW was that earlier Cameron did stuff just to be edgy. She came late to class and listened to lous music because she thought it was edgya dn helped with her work, never wore a bra and then wore old ripped clothes because she wanted to give the semblence of not giving a shit while attracting attention. Then she goes full socialist and declares that her comany has no titles and shit like that and that everyone gets paid the same.
The contrast is that in the third season she is comfortable in the role of a company head, knows that they are her emloyees, has the balls to deflect people becase she has firm views and not because she is scared of them. You see this in her interaction with her dad's bikke and stuff and taking what she wants and getting married all of a sudden. then she still wears those ripped tees but with her husband and you can tell that she isn't doin it now to just be edgy but just doesn't give a shit anymore, and I think that's progression.

And yeah, joe is still the same although he lost his fire when he saw how hard the things he wanted are to achieve. He still hads just one standard - working with cameron. He wanted ot find Cameron in Ryan but that never happened and he killed himself and hence he rebounded on Cameron, hard.

he's like a kitty inside.

Bos already took the fall and was in jail, I don't think they can do much with him except give his characted a soft blow.

agree.

I agree with everything except joe getting a family, Joe and Cameron both seem too fucked up for kids, see what Cameron did with gordon's daughters.

Writers wrote themselves in a corner with Joe/Cameron, they really can't give Cameron a happy ending with a full relationship because she just too damaged and fucking autistic. She'll try probably and then freak out when he buys the wrong cereal or some shit. Not looking forward to that storyline desu.

Gordon's illness is a really nice trick to get the characters together and on equal terms again for something maybe, and make it more about family than 'the next big thing'. Cheesy, but Halt & Catch Fire could pull it off.

People that often do not get what they want in their own family try to recreate it and without the product/idea being the thing he wants, Joe wanting cam will end in it being a reflection of early gordon/donna, or at least a contrast.

the show likes using cyclical themes. different stages of life and what we chase in it.

It makes sense that he would want it because we never see him talking about it. Its like elephant in the room.

People who often come from shitty families try to correct it with their own. It doesn't always work and you may be right that they're too fucked up, especially considering her own view of herself with bos..but look at how vulnerable she was with joe, and how happy he looked. Early joe loved to fucking lie and tell stories so he was personally protected.

This joe came out and told her the truth right away. That is a massive change of character. We will find out next season that joe reminds her of her own father.

Good.

I love the show, but you cant have it too long or itll start being about modern shit and lose the appeal.

"Halt season 7 - Everyone deals with the dotcom bubble bursting"

Cam going through a divorce won't be an easy ride, especially with tom lying for her about what happened.

I don't think she will freak out about cereal but she could still run away in the end, you're right about that.

You mean like 10BROAD36?
Which was made in the 80s?

>and then freak out when he buys the wrong cereal or some shit. Not looking forward to that storyline desu.
Goddamn I can see this happening

>the show likes using cyclical themes. different stages of life and what we chase in it.
never noticed that, nice.

And I forgot all about joe's father, too. yeah, I think it's stil an issue for him and for cameron, too.

if he gets her her dad's bike back by making bosworth tell her where her mother's house was, that would be amazing.

yeah, but they sure could have squeezed in one more season with more development and new characters while not breaking the stream.
I have to go but this was the first time in months I had serious discussion on Cred Forums

That is A-OK. Too many good shows get dragged on and just turn to shit and leave a bad taste in your mouth

I guess we will find out but based on stories we've seen i'm reasonably sure that is where this is all going since I was guessing ahead of time and got it right.

Still finishing up this season.

I'd rather see it end definitively than drag on or get canceled suddenly.

absolutely based

4 season is so it can syndicate better. 40 episodes means it can be stripped for a 8 week run.

so glad, got to watch s3 now, did the wait until season was over to watch.

I watched the finale last night and it was pretty incredible. The last four episodes this season were absolutely unreal. Some of the series best, most dark, and tragic scenes were in this last stretch. This show went from faux-Mad Men wannabe in season 1 to a contemporary standing on its own merits with season 2 and this season took it up a notch.

I hope Donna and Cameron have a reconciliation. I also hope we find out so more about the specifics of Donna and Gordon's divorce since he's all for getting new strange but Donna is craving that Clark dick like a teenage boy. I hope to see Toms ultimate BTFO but I think the show could do a time jump in episode 1 with Cam and him already split up and it would be ok.

Season 3 Joe is what I aspire to be, I can only hope I'm so fucking chill one day.

>tfw can't grow a beard like that

This show is very good but it's in no way better than Mad Men

1990 Cam definitely wear deodorant, probably a light perfume too

>facial hair grows like pubic hair
Kill me

In many ways this is not shocking. with 10 episode seasons, once you get to 30 episodes, it almost always going to get another 10 episodes unless it so bad they don't think it will ever be shown overseas/reruns. That due to 40 episodes is much easier to sell to syndication then 30 episodes. Much like how 88 and 100 episodes are much easier sells.

I'm watching I'M WATCHING THE SHOW!

it's a good show I have been watching it since it premiered

good characters with great actors playing them

the show has actually gotten better in quality as it has gone on

Is gordon handsome?

This season was horrible. Especially those jump-forwards during the last episodes. It's like they didn't know what to do and had to fill 3 more episodes. What was the central theme? What was holding the plot together?
Season 1 was great because a lot of things and the core plot: them teaming up to create a new product. I can't even say what happened in season 3, apart from Mutiny failing "off-screen".

First season was GOAT
>reverse engineer and build an IBM PC clone

Second season was meh
>lets create online chat rooms, first person shooters, broadband, antivirus software, renting out server space 24/7, etc

Season 3
>only watched a few eps, but it seemed like they were trying to create eBay/craigslist

Season 4 will probably have them invent X-Box Live, Napster, and Paypal.

HOW NICE IT IS TO SEE AN UNDERAPPRECIATED TELEVISION PROGRAM REACH ITS CONCLUSION WITHOUT BEING TERMINATED PREMATURELY.

WHAT A GREAT "SERIES".

>Your typical neurotic genius coder

Would buy a westworld robot of her.

since when the hell were you back
somehow i figured you'd dig that chick.

...

yeah he just looks like an uggo because he has to share the screen with Lee "literally perfect, no homo" Pace
also he's a great actor

not the best (by far) but definitely the most underappreciated show on TV. we should be glad it got 4 full seasons and a chance to end it properly, cuz this show had fucking abysmal ratings from the beginning. AMC could've just aired random walking dead reruns and get 5x the viewership of this show.

Dat season finale was seriously one of the best and most satisfying finales i've ever seen. So glad they are choosing to finish the story properly instead of dragging it out as long as they can.

G O H O M E A U T I S T B O Y
H O M E
A U T I S T
B O Y

well he did it, the absolute madman
show got 4 seasons with figuratively no one watching it

holy shit

The show would've been more successful had they not completely shifted the dramatic focus from the men to the women. This is an example of the fact that pandering has reached the saturation point.

I actually kinda agree desu. I really liked the focus shift in the second season, but was really surprised when they didn't divide the focus equally in the third season. Male focus > Female focus > balanced focus would've made for a really cool and obvious narrative structure, and I'm not sure why they didn't try harder to achieve it.

MUHTEENIE

These new showrunners since s2 don't seem to get her armpits out as much.
Shit show now.

Go away, you deviant pathetic fuck.

if they're going to invent (one of) the world first browsers they have to time jump again. berners lee writes nexus in 90 and nothing happens again until 93 when mosaic comes out. they could possibly make something similar to erwise but i think a browser is a just an early plot device that will be replaced by the 3rd episode.

the end of the series will probably have gordon (if he lives) as president of a regional isp like earthlink, donna will probably end up at microsoft or just stay at her firm, and cam will be at comdex or maybe the first e3 showing off space bike 3d with joe.

>tall as fuck
>well built, board shouldered
>great voice
being that fucking handsome is just not fair
any nudes?

Incorrect.

time skip is literally the best TV gimmick, more shows should do it
