There are too many variables ranging from the fov of the camera and whatever distortion it might have to the fact that you have no good way of making sure the camera is perfectly level to measure how far the horizon has dropped etc. This is one of those things you'd really have to see with your own eyes to judge the curvature.

So 48 miles would be 8x48x48= 18,432" which is 1536 feet, now there are a bunch of variables including how high your vantage point is off of the ground and how tall the object you're viewing is, so I'd say if you're viewing the tallest tower in Toronto, that is about 1800 feet. It's entirely plausible you could see the tip top of that building from a ground vantage point as the other user described, now factoring atmospheric refraction it wouldn't surprise me if he could indeed see more than that.

The formula describes if point A is where you are standing, and point B is some 48 miles away, were to draw a straight line that intersected with your visible horizon line that extended off into the abyss then from that imaginary line point B will be X feet beneath it.
