The kino meme started as a natural consequence or result of the film, movie, flick, etc, categorization by kids who thought(think) it's more interesting to shoehorn films into these meaningless categories instead of actually trying to intellectually discuss them.
It's so stupid that kino means even less now than it originally did, and pretty much anything with some meme value is regarded as "kino".

I thought it was in German but apparently in it it's movie theatre and it's the same in Russian, it means movie theatre. Movie in Russian is фильм "fil'm". Though maybe there are certain instances you can use kino for movie.
