Did Will do good in the tests? Was the paper exam really a test to see who would react to having no desk? Was this scene really a test to see if the subject can see something disgusting as being good, or something innocent looking as being evil?

Not at all. Z probably didn't even want him tested in the first place, but obviously (going by the sequels) K has a shit ton of clout in the MIB. Even after the tests, Z doesn't want him but K insists.

Now, I don't know my K wants J so much. His only reasoning was that he chased that dude successfully in the beginning. Maybe Space PR wanted more diversity in the workplace, I don't know.

I think officially what MIB wanted was what Z wanted. Guy who does good on tests and does what's expected of him. However K sees how he reacts differently but creatively. He sees things other guys don't see because of his personality and him being a cop. He does well in unexpected ways and demonstrates some abilities I assume K has, which is why he picked J for his successor.

Paper exam was meant to be incredibly uncomfortable, hence everyone trying to find a decent way to write. J showed common sense by bringing the table over to his chair. The actual content of the exam was probably meaningless.

Gun test was good because he was able to notice all the little details and figured that bad aliens were just misunderstood. Which makes sense because there are loads of menacing looking aliens in the movies that turn out to be completely harmless.

Everything leading up to J becoming an actual MIB is the highlight of the movie. The test scene where he breaks his pencil and drags that table across the floor is 10/10 physical comedy.

None of those people were there to be tested though. The whole test, the other "applicants" included, was just for J.
That's why the test just happened to be the day after K made contact with J and Z had the whole "you're all we've come to expect from years of government training" line at the end.
