I think at the end of the episode it's meant to show Tony as increasing concerned with business success at the expense of tradition and culture (at least relative to past Dons). Columbus Day remains a hot cultural topic, listening to NPR last Monday would've made you rage if you're white and don't have low-T. So from that perspective it seems realistic that it's something the crew cared about.
