Honestly this awful photo has me more interested in Doctor Who than anything previously announced about Class, the Christmas special, or S10. I hope this is real and I hope they are Cybermen because that design looks better than any previous new series Cybermen and just in general looks great. Very refreshing and makes them feel creepy and alien again.

So realistically what are the chances that it's really a Platt-penned Spare Parts adaptation?
After the announcement of the classic writer and those primitive-looking Cybermen, it's looking a lot more likely than I would have believed possible.

I'm keen for a Platt story but I'm not sure how I would feel if it was a Spare Pants-esque one. I'm sure that would be great but I'd rather a change in Cybermen be something that happens going forwards, not just an episode set back during their early days and then shitty Stompermen being continued to be used in future episodes.

It's interesting how Sarah Jane has sometimes taken on the Doctor-ish role of the skeptic, as this is the second time it's been strongly emphasized that she doesn't believe in ghosts and Clyde has made a point of it multiple times that, unlike Sarah Jane, he believes in destiny. This isn't a role that's usually associated with caring and motherly figures like Sarah Jane and it's honestly pretty refreshing.

I have mixed feelings about this one. The stretch of Part 1 where it looks like Sarah Jane has legit Alzheimer's or something is way too realistic and way too heavy and would have fucking destroyed me if it were real. It makes the sudden transition to "haha you've been rused, it was all part of my devious plan! >:^)" feel cheap. But Part 2 was pretty fun and a good finale. Even it has some tortured moments, like Clyde's final message to Rani ("I always...") but it manages to make good use of the whole supporting cast and has lots of tension. Also I think we got our first swear of the series when Luke asks "What the hell is going on?"

What can I say? Fan-fucking-tastic. Got to take a picture with Colin, Sophie and Lutz Riedel (You most likely have never heard of him, but he's the go-to dub voice for Timothy Dalton and Jonathan Pryce, most famous however for being the hero Jan Tenner in an eponymous series of children's audio adventures. Narm's the charm in this case - they never got any better than, say, Eighties' DW at their lowest point.). Herr Riedel did a reading from the "Gods of Winter" audiobook series he reads in German, which was great fun.
It was a rather small convention, with about 300 or 400 people attending, tops. Most people had passable to very good English, which the actors were surprised to find out. Almost nobody watches the dub, like ten fingers went up when they asked.
What I was surprised to find out, however, is that Osgood/Ingrid Oliver actually has perfect German (well, give or take some clearly English turns of phrase every odd sentence or so) because she is half German and was born in Ludvigshafen. Her biggest desire in acting after DW is to star in the German crime show "Tatort" (Crime Scene) to make her Papa proud, who doesn't care for DW but was in the audience anyway.
Another surprise cool person was Catherine "Countess Scarlioni" Schell, who speaks no less than FIVE languages fluently (out of necessity: "I'm Hungarian, nobody speaks our languagy, so we need to develop a natural aptitude for picking up other languages")
I got a compliment from Phil Harness for my moustache (he actually asked me for the German expression and handed me an autograph were he reiterated the compliment with the German expression, Schnurrbart), who despite being a shit writer for DW so far, is a super nice guy.
I attended some really nice panels, most prominently Colin's and Sophie's. Colin is just as approachable as I remember him to be and super fun to listen to. He told a few stories I already knew but got howls of laughter out of the audience.

Sophie is just bouncing off the walls. You wouldn't know her age if it weren't for the wrinkles. When she spoke about how RTD had planned to bring her back, I asked her if she prefers the "A Charitable Earth"-Ace or Time Lady apprentice Ace from the Gallifrey series and whether she'd like a BF spin-off with her as the central character. Like Charlie Pollard or Vienna, but actually exciting. She said it should be about Ace travelling around in her own Millenium Falcon style spaceship, showing nitro-9 up the tailpipes of universal polluters and going on covert missions for the Time Lords. I proposed Awesome Clandestine Explosions as a title, which got a chuckle out of her and the audience.
Gareth David-Lloyd was super confused that the German "Yahoo" or "Yeeeaah" is "Juchuh!", which he interpreted as "You Who" and told stories about how John Barrowman used to prank everyone on set, like sticking his dick through Eve Myles' hair rollers or absconding with dick-like props to his room. Also stuff like putting on a fake handlebar moustache underneath the sheet in the morgue where Gwen goes to indentify him an Ianto's corpse in Children of Earth. And Gareth swallowed one of Barrowman's boogers while being cradled by him during his death scene, because the chemical reagent they rub onto your nose so you can cry on the spot also makes you nose run.
Peter Purves got a bit distracted and told stories that didn't quite answer the questions the fans had, but he's 77 and otherwise still as nice as I remember him from 2013, when I last had a chance to meet him.
Rob Shearman, if given a sharpie, will doodle Daleks absolutely everywhere, whether you ask him to or not.
Tobe Hadoke is a real bro and does fantastic, super-relatable geek standup where he talks about how he obsesses over DW and how that filters into his personal life. Or he just obsesses about DW right then and there. It's great.

Anyway, they had a pop quiz on Sunday for the actors and actresses, and the other team had basically already lost by the time Toby Hadoke and Sophie were put on the same team.
When it came to charades with DW episode titles, Ace almost did cartwheels on stage while Toby took about 2 seconds to decypher the episode titles. The only one he really had trouble with was The Girl Who Died, which was illustrated by Sophie dropping to the floor, jumping back up and pointing to and cupping her tits. Toby's guesses included "The buxom death" and "Death of boobies".

And yes, it was totally worth it.
I think the best bits about it were people actually complimenting me without me prompting them to. I got compliments for my beard, sympathy for my hairline from Toby and, and this is the best part, since I've always hated my voice:
When the cosplay contest was underway, the announcer, a lovely girl with Cyberman leggins, tried to announce a Mary Tamm Romana cosplayer, but couldn't pronounce her full name. So she asked if anybody could. I could, so she asked me to come on stage and do the announcement for her. And so I announced the Lady Romanadvoratrelundar of House Heartshaven. Later, Cyberpantsgirl and a weeping angel both talked me up on how they liked my voice. (Nothing came of it directly, but we exchanged Facebook contacts, so maybe, maybe...)
Colin DID notice I was wearing some variation of his costume, but I didn't get the chance to explain to him that it was due to a lazy German penciler for a comic cover that I looked like that.

Nobody noticed the Dominion/Dark Eyes Master by themselves, but I met a few other Master cosplayers to gang up with.

And I also met a 11 cosplayer again I once stumbled across at a Ren Fair in a totally different part of Germany.

Since saturday, the amount of people I've got on facebook has more than doubled, and there are a handful of people I actually wouldn't mind to become actual friends with (chiefly among them a chubby girl that besides all that looked remarkably like Wose Tywah and has a wonderful sense of humour. Failing that, I'll also try to keep in contact with her equally thicc friend cosplaying as Gwen). It's a wonderful feeling. I'm also invited to at least 3 "Stammtisch" (regular's table) meetings, two of them in my vicinity.

There were exactly three people among those I came into contact with I'd consider "bad eggs". One who asked during a panel of the German "Whocast" podcast, why she, a woman, should listen to three men talking about Who. They responded in a jocular manner "For the boys" - one of those middle aged men struck a "sexy" pose to that. She replied that boys weren't quite her style and she'd prefer superior women. Funnily enough, a lesbian couple in the row next to mine audibly groaned at that. When she was still talking about how horrible men were after the trio had told her that Pia, the fourth member of their podcast, was sick with the flu, the whole room gave an annoyed "Uuuurgh".
Second bad egg was a butterball who is the admin for quite a few German fan presences on the net when it comes to Who, who didn't allow anyone's opinion save his own on the Doctors, the attractivity of companions (or rather, the actors protraying them), the way the show be handled, or the costumes worn for the contest. He was tiresome. Problem is, he's the big fat spider in this tiny corner of the world wide web he controls, so dissenting opinion get shot down by exclusion.
And the third bad egg was a girl who thought it was alright to criticize me for my choices of cosplay. Nothing made by myself, characters no-one recognizes, how dare I.

I did say a few threads ago that I used to study Anglistics. I also listen to a lot of English audio books, chiefly among them Big Finish, so I get my vocabulary from there.
