He wasn't really fighting his inner demons. His deal was that he's seen so much awful shit that he had a mental breakdown, and in the process become nearly a nihilist in his approach to life, who clings to his job as a crtuch to keep himself on the straight and narrow, but can't help but to bend and break the rules (in an almost fatalistic, self-destructive way) in order to ensure justice is delivered to the criminals he's profiling.

What makes him standout from other "brilliant cop bending the rules for the sake of the greater good" trope is that he actually forms a meaningful bond with Alice, someone he investigated for murder and knows for a fact to being a remorseless killer. It's a super weird love/friendship that is surprisingly endearing and makes him such a complicated character.

2nd episode is 10/10 and season 1 gets pretty good towards the end. Rest of the show is nothing special.
