Asian film thread (Korean, Japanese, Chinese, etc.)

Let's get it.

Starting with a classic. The OST is superb.

youtube.com/watch?v=izT-8UbhJZQ

Age of Shadows still sticks in my mind even after seeing it a while ago. It was a near-flawless movie.

>yfw 99% of flip movies were absolute shit
The other 1% was Heneral Luna

No shit man, they fucking suck ass at movies lol. It's basically a dumbed-down cheaper version of whatever Korea does.

Metro Manila was quite good but it was produced by a Brit.

khavn?
youtube.com/watch?v=ZyXMI_qwe8Y

Korean movies are the only ones worth discussing.

Yeah man, those half a dozen edgy thrillers they made ten years ago sure are great.

pure kino?

indeed

Without a doubt.

How is this fucking guy in seriously like 80% of all japanese movies? Like I don't even feel like im exaggerating when I say he's just the lead in every movie ever.

Because he should be.

such a good movie

Name 1 (one) movie from either chyna or japan that is worth watching. I'll wait.

Absolutely.
>A Bittersweet Life

An exercise in beauty. Great film.

>Age of Shadows

Based. You must be an enthusiast.

This movie really captured a mid 00s cool.

>Hana-Bi03.jpg
that's one of his movies though. a nice one too. sonatine is best.

youtube.com/watch?v=P4l5nEDd0hQ

Thought this movie was really good for most of it. Didn't really like the ending that much though, he's in the same position in life he was when it started (arguably worse) except maybe a better outlook

Chow Yun-fat is such a likable actor, i really loved him in The Killer.
You could say that. I was blown away, but I didn't really expect anything less from AoS since Song Kang-ho was in it.
It really did, everything was so slickly framed and assembled.

Happy together

Anyone seen the wailing yet?
Thoughts?

I liked it but I not loved it. To me Why don't you play in hell? hit more close to home.

Tokyo Story.
I think many people have seen it already. There's torrents out on public and private trackers. Hell, on avistaz, you can get a BD remux version of it.

I personally really enjoyed it for the great landscape shots, atmosphere, and odd tone shifts.

Chun Woo-hee is gorgeous as always.

Kotoko
In The Mood For Love

What about the girl? She's in a better position at the end.

>A Bittersweet Life

that final shootout

Sublime. The OST was just so perfect.

Every time I show it to a new person (at least from my experience) they say they loved the movie a lot. It's quite accessible because it's just a simple gangster story that is executed well.

Pic related, Inside Men: The Original is another good movie that stars Lee Byung-hyun. Gives off a more commercialized vibe due to the big-budget production, but it's still an entertaining watch. Political thriller.

Oops, forgot pic.

bittersweet life is kino, i fucking love this movie

is lee byung-hyun considered a good actor in korea? i really like his performances and his presence in a movie automatically makes it more enjoyable to watch for some reason

Sion Sono is my favorite director. Watched Love and Peace recently and really enjoyed it. I'm dying to see The Whispering Star.

Yes. He is one of the most bankable actors in South Korea and highly sought after. He really takes pride in a lot of his works. A superb A-list actor. Sadly, his attempt to break into the US has met with mixed reception (see GI Joe).

But fuck Hollywood, the man should stay with what he's comfortable with.

Maybe in the same position, but as a character he really changed.

Is Age of Shadows already out? Any way to watch it online?

considered one of the top actors in south korea alongside Choi Min-sik (Oldboy) and Song Kang-ho (Memories of Murder)

I made a list a while back really should of saved it.

The Righteous Thief
Lee Dae-ro Can't Die
Marrying the Mafia 2-4
girl scouts
My Scary Girl
See You After School
Miss Granny
My Dear Desperado
Miss Granny
Veteran
The Suicide Forecast
Conduct Zero
penny pinchers
How to Use Guys with Secret Tips

It is not out. Checked avistaz and it's not there, but who knows, maybe someone on an obscure tracker has it. Haven't seen any BD release dates for it either. Shame, since I really want to buy a physical copy for my collection.

>Age of Shadows

Fuck man, every time someone brings it up they say it's goddamned amazing. I can't believe I missed the window to see it.

miss granny so good you listed it twice

>Veteran

Aww das my nigga, what a fun movie. Kickass main theme too.

youtube.com/watch?v=zIue1WsLZq8

has there been ANY chink kino in the last 5 years outside of kar wai?

inb4 ice battle.webm

>ice battle.webm

What is it, someone post it

I really can't think of any.

However, one film that particularly sticks out to me from the Chinese is Raise the Red Lantern (1991). That is pure kino.

>talking about movies that aren't available on torrent yet

It's like you want to leave others out of the loop.

i skipped through this bullshit and still hated the time I wasted on it, it's fucking dogshit

I'm waiting for that BD copy man, I swear I'm fiending for it hard.
>My Dear Desperado

Every time I try to stave myself off from romcoms, I can't do it. It's either a hit or a miss. I was pleasantly surprised by this one. Jung Yu-mi is so pretty. She was also in Train to Busan.

you could check out a dirty carnival if you enjoyed ABL
imdb.com/title/tt0821442/?ref_=nv_sr_1
it was one of my fav korean movies, sucks that i can t recomend it to any of my friends

Ah man, I know all about that one too. It's fantastic as well. The scene where the MC recalls his experience of stabbing someone to his friend is well-done.

also once upon a time in high school made by the same director

From Vegas to Macau
Lost in Journey, Thialand, and Hong Kong ( they are part of a series.)
Goodbye Mr. Loser
Detective Chinatown
Go Away Mr. Tumor
I Am Somebody
Let the Bullets Fly
Impetuous Love in Action
My Old Classmate
The Breakup Guru
American Dreams in China
Better and Better

Iceman ( this isn't a good movie, but it's one of those so bad it's funny.)

i cant find it atm but it pops up from time to time, its some cg battle scene from a chinese wuxia or some shit

Shaolin Soccer is so comfy.

I liked.

Why? I watch the first hour and nothing really happen.

Not a movie, but goddamn this was some ridiculously hype shit.

And by ridiculously hype I mean some of the dumbest, most retarded shit I've ever watched. But I couldn't stop watching it. Felt like a 35 year old spinster yelling like a madman every time FeMC just wrecked someone's emotional shit and the main theme just started blaring out of nowhere.

youtube.com/watch?v=2DNscgRpGLE

>OH BAH GOD ANOTHER SLAP
>[CAN'T FORGIVE INTENSIFIES]

did anyone watch the handmaiden yet how was it?

Good movie. Better fap.
My mom loved this shit when it aired originally.

All I heard was 아이씨 every 5 minutes from her or a yell.

>129 episodes

Fuck that man, you're crazy.

Masquerade from 2012 was pretty good. Also has Lee Byunghun playing a bit less serious character.

This.
Love Exposure is good. But it's at it's core a drama miniseries.

It lacks the climax of Why don't you play in hell?

It is a trilogy.

>MFW there's no proper bluray release

probably because it is for fucking ants

From Vegas to Macau? Really? I thought it was shit.

Did anyone see The Last Princess?

any good subs for train to busan yet?

I struggled through floating clouds, is it my fault?

Sometimes when i watch those extremely under watched japanese movies i don't know how to judge them.

Pure
Triple confirms

Strange Circus is Sono's best movie.

One in my top 10 asian movies/

There's one on avistaz.

Tokyo tribe?

nah, Into a Dream is his best

I love Tokyo Tribe, but I would never claim it's a good movie.

Whats the best Asian horror movie

>pick a movie about Korean comfort women
>expect borefest of tears and patriotic rants
>it's a ghost movie

Koreans are really creative

A Tale of Two Sisters is my personal favorite.

youtube.com/watch?v=L1XAaefu2y4

Absolute kino

>Heneral Luna
youtu.be/I_T1ykhy3Fg
You goddamn right it was good.

Also
>not planning to watch Shin Godzilla on the big screen tomorrow when it ends its theatrical run

HL was the only good Filipino film I've watched. Shame, I quite like going there for vacation.

Anyone have recommendations for comfy, modern family drama movies?

I really like Yi Yi, and Koreeda's 'Still Walking' and 'Nobody Knows'.

Also enjoyed Tokyo Sonata.

Our Little Sister.

Was it actually good? "I Wish" and "Like Father, Like Son" made me give up on Koreeda. Bit too sentimental and somewhat dull. Where would it rank against those/within his filmography?

I liked it better than I Wish, but it doesn't top Nobody Knows. Probably somewhere along the middle for me.

Cool, sounds like a chill, comfy movie. I'll check it out. Cheers

Han Gong-ju man. Han Gong-FUCKING-ju

Kinda ripped me to shreds, in a good way. Guess I'm not so jaded after all once I watch some movies and stop shitposting on this site.

>tfw a Lav Diaz movie will never come stateside in theaters without resorting to going to a film festival

Absolutely heartbreaking. A great film and standout performance by Chun Woo-hee. Also appears in The Wailing.

>Why is there no sites like Nyaa or Bakabt but for Korean stuff like movies?
>Is the fanbase full of moralfags or something?
Are you retarded? There are far more trackers for Korean stuff than Japanese. Plenty of public ones and private ones.

Not close enough to the source material. She was actually raped by ~110 people, not 10.

I'm not him, but it's better than Like Father, Like Son & Still Walking, I think.

Yeah, but it was still compelling.
She is so gorgeous

Search for 'train to busan subtitles' and follow the reddit link. Some guy there made them himself

Don't bother. There hasn't been a good release yet. It's still an artifacted mess with poor cropping.

/thatguy/

Is what I said incorrect in any way? It's in unwatchable quality, unless you're a SEA pleb still dealing with streaming videos.

I just got done watching a version from tpb and there was nothing wrong with it. Download the subs from reddit and you're good to go

Nothing wrong with it? Part of the screen has been cropped away, it's in shit quality and there's more artifacting than your average WEB-DL. Unless you plan on watching it on a phone or something and don't mind that part of the screen is missing, don't bother.

I notice there is always one autist fuck like that in asian movie thread, probably the same guy.

>watching asian movies just because they are from Asia and not because of their quality

Bunch of tryhards to be honest

Keep watching those streaming videos in your little hut, pinoy fuck.

A Bittersweet Life is still my favorite Asian film. Lee Byung-hyun was perfect for this. He conveyed everything so perfectly.

this is my favourite from the movie

youtube.com/watch?v=L1XAaefu2y4

Thats why there is a thread of people talking about quality ones and bad ones. Fuck off kid

essential korean crime kino:

a bittersweet life
a dirty carnival
chaser
memories of murder
lady vengeance
sympathy for mr vengeance
new world
the man from nowhere
mother
save the green planet

The simple fact that you are watching asian movies while you probably have seen only 1% of the good movies produced in the west proves that you are the kid. A biased one at too, concerned more with the origin of a movie than it's actual quality

It's so rewatchable. I make sure to watch it at least once a year.

got any more webms friendo?

Anyone got a working torrent for Age of Shadows?

this fucking movie

expected something totally different from what I got with that movie

For (You).
Thanks, downloading now.
Nothing out yet, at least from avistaz.

korean movies:
>every movie of not is some over the top edgelord revenge fantasy

chinese movies:
>fake hollywood movies, terrible overacting

jap movies:
>literally haven't been good in decades

Contender for worst Sion Sono movie (and I'm a fan of his). At least Mariko-sama was in it.

I'm Korean
and I don't like korean movies

Only one I liked was pic related

Who is your favorite 무한도전 member?

skt, rox or samsung gonna win world?

Yeah, I thought it was pretty bad. And this is coming from someone who liked The Virgin Psychics. Still better than Shinjuku Swan though.

...

...

This is criminally overlooked. Great movie.

>mfw polices in korea are generally actually that incompetent

>JSA
>criminally overlooked
what the fug

He's right though, it gets less mentions than other movies

I don't know what it was about this movie but it left me traumatized for several days.

Recently saw this and thought it was all right, I thought the main girl was pretty qt.

it gets mentioned in every asian movie thread

...

The Quiet Family is a very comfy and nice little black comedy if you can grab a copy of it. Directed by the same guy who did A Bittersweet Life and The Good, the Bad, the Weird.

thread has become a little bit too korean focus so imma whip out some of the cat 3 movies from HK in the 90s
check out this shit though
The Eight Immortals Restaurant: The Untold Story

Needs no intro, but if by some godforsaken reason you haven't seen Legend of Drunken Master, just do it already. Police Story as well.

Are you serious about Age of Shadows? It was okay at best and his worst film by far.

Any good fantasy recommendations?

I can't stand asian people acting, most of it looks forced and weird as fuck

It's not that good.

A Girl at My Door
Barking Dogs Never Bite

who like asghar farhadi kino here?
can't wait for the salesman

this is why 'asian' is a horrible word for categorizing anything non-european

Yeh, I just recently started watching his films after constantly hearing about him. Looking forward to The Salesman!

Having said that, middle-eastern cinema should probably have its own thread somewhere. I've really got to watch more films from that region.

Saw this shit about a year ago and I can't bear to watch it again. It still haunts me.

youtube.com/watch?v=KmNsOe8bVkg

youtu.be/B0MriM9lYSQ
This one was good.

age of shadows...is it available?

3-Iron is good

>New world
That's the first Korean movie I watched and got me into watching Korean movies.

The train scene in that is probably my favourite 10 minutes in film

...

Best.
youtube.com/watch?v=eqh5O9LbjhY

Because he is a famous japanese comedian

Then you're watching very few Jap Kinos.

Yeah nah don't even compare flip cinema to koreans. Flip movies are bottom of the barrel level garbage.

>literally haven't been good in decades

nigga you haven't been looking

Anyone from hong kong has seen that cult kino, anthony wong is one of my favourite actors

I kinda prefer the Happiness of the Katakuri's remake because everything becomes so much more absurd.

have you ever consider the fact that he likes asian films because he is genuinely interested in asian culture and not because he wants to show off he's vanity?

That doesn't make sense. Why would he be interested in a culture that's not part of glorious America?

I wasn't sure if he was more of an RDJ kind of thing, likeable guy that draws in audiences.

This. Goddamn, those movies were compelling. the source material was better, but to be fair, the movies made me read the manga while waiting for the third movie to come out

As good as this looks, it's not gonna come stateside, was hoping that Patintero would be a hit over there so it can come over here but we all know what happened

>mfw flipfags would rather watch Star Cinema shit and automatically classify Pinoy indies as "poverty porn"
>mfw they let Kathniel shit prosper while good looking movies like Patintero fail

Can anyone recommend me Vietnamese kino? I enjoyed 'Cyclo' and 'The scent of green papaya'.

>that final scene on the roof

goty movie

Don't bother

2046

Have you seen Clash? I'm also interested in Vietnamese kino. Johnny Nguyen seems to be in a ton of films, he always seems to play the same character though

>tfw want to make a flip version of TGTBATU or OUATITW
>setting would be the midst of the spanish/american conflict in the country before the treaty

how do you get the style without making it look like a knockoff or copycat?

Stick to the classics. There is also one by that Cannes winner but you are right that quality stuff is far and few between them.

Try Obra Plata Mata.

Do you like Jia Zhangke

TGTBTW is a ripoff of TGTBTU but nobody bats an eye.

my favorite asian movie. Best actor performance. Shiba lama

Kairo (Pulse) is nice

Gangnam 1970
Gangsters check
Brotherhood check
Nostalgic music and clothing check
Sex scene check (sex scene was the reason why this movie got reccomended to me)

Damn Koreans why do you have to be so good

Pure kino right here

Streaming 720p and 1080p is pretty good these days. I watch most of my korean tv that way.

terrifying
ending made me feel legit queasy
but at the same time the movie is really funny
