He did things to lash out at perceived enemies, or 'beasts'. A beast is a being that may ignorantly or without intrinsic evil cause harm and destruction. The West visited much harm and destruction on those he cared about. He probably lashed out against the west (Lockerbie Plane bombing) as one takes a swing, or baseball bat to a beast. The beast can easily absorb the blow, but one has to do something.
