It's 162 games, and yes, it's very excessive. It's partially a relic from the way baseball operated from 1903 to 1970, which was that the best team in the American League and the best team in the National League would face each other in the regular season. So the idea was that having more games=a better sample size=a better sense of who the best team actually is. Of course, there's also the fact that it's insanely lucrative to have so many games. MLB made $10 billion last season.

It's a super chill sport to watch because of its slow pace and the low stakes of each individual game. Compared to, say, football which has a way more intense atmosphere because each win is precious when you only have 16 games a season.
