Mixed doubles had a lot of arguing, probably because the teams are only 2 (so less clear chain of command) and man+woman so many teams had off the ice relationships.
The Norwegian team had to go to a sports shrink to prevent on the ice arguing from damaging their off the ice relationship.
Also in the press conference after their semifinal loss the girl is like "Yeah, we're done playing together after this olympics" and the guy is like "Wait what?!"

You can see for yourself what the results are by watching the olympics. It's not a perfect program but it allows for athletes to practice their sport nearly full time. Maybe it should be expanded but it already exists.

the usa program is pretty much small tournaments with the few teams in the midwest, at a lower level, and a few international tournaments for a single team to travel to a year.

the only reason that the women asian curlers are doing so well is exactly this reason. china, japan and korea all have teams that have been coached by canadians, and they train in canada with the canadian teams at canadian rinks, during curling season. all because their olympic commitee sees an oppotunity for medals in a much closer skill gap in the womens game, and invests money in it to make it happen.

compare that to american olympic commitee who can make the same effort with their womens team, and actually live right across the fucking border, considering ontario always has the most curling talent, but they wont spend the money to do it. such a shame.

america barely has curling rinks. they use regular ice rinks and paint the rings and pebble the ice. then ti gets plowed over so that it can be used for other skating sports after the day is done.

they talk about how black people cant skate, but you dont need to skate to play curling. if theres a good curling club, its cheap too. i own zero equipment, but i can go to a curling rink with friends, and sign up for equipment rental and some beginner training and ice time for a few ends for like 20 bucks. i wear my shoes with a slip cover and grip cover, borrow brooms and stones, sign a waiver. but trying to find a full time curling sheet and club in the states isnt happening outside the midwest near the canadian border.

i know vernon davis loves curling and actively tries to recruit his nfl buddies to play with him. it just doesnt get much exposure tho, even if athletes love it.

I've spent the last couple days practicing my Japanese by reading articles and watching documentaries on curling in Japan on youtube.

The short of it:
Curling gets introduced to Japan in 1980 to some shitty fishing villages in the northern most part by Canadians (apparently they were a sister city with some place in Alberta).
They start poverty curling on natural ice with improvised stones made out of propane canisters and similar.
They build the first curling only hall in Japan in 1988.

Mari Motohashi (represented Japan in the olympics in 2006 and 2010) is from this area.
She identified two problems.
1. High level curling teams aren't really able to survive in Japan except in the run up to the olympics (they usually fall apart right after the olympics are over, lack of public attention and sponsors).
2. Her home area produced a lot of curling players for the olympic teams but they all move away from home because the town isn't really able to provide with sponsors or other investments.

So she sets out to build a team that can survive without needing the olympic spotlight on it and have it located in her home area.
She goes headhunting in the high schools and gets Fujisawa to come home (Fujisawa is from the same area but had moved to Nagano because that's where it was easier to find a sponsored team).

This olympic team is pretty much her life's work.
