I'm going to disagree on this one. Not necessarily on your assessment of the protesters, but the inherent negativity of carrying long rifles in public. In our modern society we usually don't see long guns being carried around. Most of the time we do see them are police responding to violence or people on the news committing violence. This creates a mental connection between the presence of guns and immediate violence. Most gun owners do not perpetrate mass shootings, but we only see the guns when someone does. If we were, as our forefathers were, accustomed to seeing rifles carried as a normal daily occurrence we would not have this inherent expectation of impending violence every time we see a gun.

And yes, in the beginning this would embolden mass shooters and criminals as they would no longer need to hide their weapons, but that would only last until the realization that they're no longer guaranteed to be the most powerful person in the room because they no longer have the only gun in the room.
