Slamfist could throw his boulder and teleport to where it was... scratch it was my favorite he could make a portal between his legs to a small plane of existance where they kept all their gear and base of operations, like a huge bag of holding... archer could use his bow like a hookshot, and his belt buckle was a personal shield emitter... ocula could climb walls like a spider and shoot lasers out of her eyes... inaniac could sorta control the weather... punch it was telepathic... freakinstein could integrate himself into mechanical structures....

I remember loving the sprites in Doom, even if they had invisible monsters. But I remember Quake with the giant lava pit where all the bodies fall in when you finish, then Duke Nukem was its own thing. Was it number two where you kick the dude's eye out into a field goal?

I can still hear the grenade launcher sound of Quake. I think my issue was that Quake looked to grimy compared to Doom, those pink Minotaur dudes gave a lot of contrast to the world.
I think I also moved on to Starcraft, Diablo, and Age of Empires 2 pretty quickly. I'm loving AOE2 DE these days, super fun.

I never got into Diablo ever, I think my cousin tried getting me into the 2nd one way back in the early 2000s and found it boring. Starcraft is probably one of my favourite RTS games of all time alongside C&C (especially Red Alert).
I liked Quake's grimy look, keep in mind it was supposed to be some medieval RPG originally not a classic FPS like Doom or DN3D.

Funny, I remember wanting to like C&C but never getting into it back then. I think I bought a box set that had Yuri's Revenge at BJ's or something, as well as one with Diablo 1 and 2.
Quake had its charms but I remember even in N64 times it didn't evolve.

Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge are definitely my favourites, it's what got me into the franchise. The music was so fucking great.
Quake 2 good and Quake 3, but after that I think the franchise pretty much died. Quake 4 was some random military shooter with some cool cutscenes, Quake Live is just Quake 3, Quake Champions is dead.

Red Alert 1 was more serious in tone, Red Alert 2 was over the top and hilarious.
If you ever wanna buy them (first 3 Quake games + expansion packs) it's like 30 bucks on Steam or something.

Eh, I don't really care enough to play Quake again. I don't think it would hold up today.
I never played the later Half Life games, I liked the originals but by the time 2 came out I was already doing other stuff. Same with Resident Evil, it was awesome from RE 1-3 but I never had the systems to run anything past that. I heard the story of the latest one and it sounded like shit because it was a generic horror game instead of a story learning about an evil mega corp doing some insane shit.

We used to play scooter hockey on them, and we had a whole unit in gym where "roads" and cardboard buildings were set up and we learned traffic safety. You hit it on the head. 2 was fun, but HL1, that was insane. It was the first game of its kind, and just went on forever getting better and better.
B4 that there was doom and quake, but there was no real story, no purpose, just levels and monsters. HL1, you were the hero. It was an inflection point in gaming. Everything changed after HL1. (tbh, in retrospect, 2 was nowhere near as good, except for the graphics).

hmmm, but he's been with the team a few seasons now. and worth 10m a year? He's not that good. If I had to wipe the slate clean, I'd keep 3, marner, mathews and freddie. If I could only choose one, marner. I love watching him play, he's the real deal.

I agree with every point. But I like Kessel. You know he used to leave practice and go out onto the street in skates and get street meat? He also would order pizza pizza to the rink during practice.
Every training camp he would come back being 40 pounds overweight because he would go fishing in the off season and drink beer.
He was great. Plus everyone knew what you were getting from him. Goals. thats it. Thats what he was paid for and he did it.

Plus fam, salary cap is going up soon. Thats why all these guys are going for big contracts. So it will be inline with the salary cap bump and not with the current salary cap.
