The greatest peril to civilised progress—aside from an annihilative war—is some kind of basically reactionary system with enough grudging concessions to the dispossessed to make it really work after a fashion, and thus with the capacity to postpone indefinitely the demand of the masses for their real rights—educational, social, and economic—as human beings in a world where the great resources should be cornered by none. . . . Unsupervised capitalism is through. But various Nazi and fascist compromises can be cooked up to save the plutocrats most of their spoils while lulling the growing army of the unpropertied with either a petty programme of panem et circenses, or else a system of artificially created and distributed jobs at starvation wages on the C.C.C. or W.P.A. idea. A regime of that sort, spiced with the right brand of hysterical flag-waving, sloganeering, and verbal constitution-saving, might conceivably be as stable and popular as Hitlerism —and that is what the younger and more astute babbitts of the Republican party are quietly and insidiously working toward.

read the case of charles dexter ward last week, good stuff homie, but turn it down with the racial slurs will ya

Beat me to it. I read that in a high school math class. Perfect short story... get in, tell it and then get out. Easy read. Then I gave the book back to my buddy and went out and got all his other stuff.

He believed there was a scientific basis for racialism. Science was pretty shit during his lifetime.

Those are actually really good. Yeah.
Fucking Randolph Carter and the cats on the moon...

Quest of Iranon.

But there's no tentacles in that. Only sadness.

Lol. Saved.
I got that book on a trip to Sweden. It's pretty lame but I liked it as a teen. The same day, I picked up the Sisters of Mercy's early singles compilation. Good combo.

What language was it in? I hear the French versions of Lovecraft's work are the best versions.

Holy shit, that scene always makes me so sad and I think of At the Mountains of Madness and take SOME solace in that. Don't know why.

The Necronomicon book was in English. It was the one written by "Simon" and deemed a total fake but I liked the sigils and the Sumerian stuff. It was fun.
I did find it strange to find an English book in a Swedish bookstore, though. Then again, I found a coffee table book about the Mother Lode Parade which is where I live in a po-dunk town in the middle of nowhere wild west (Sonora, CA) at the same bookstore. Go figure.

came here to say this

Alex the Rambler?

Damn, is that the creepy church that inspired The Haunter in The Dark?

That's the reason I liked it so much.

It's an Episcopalian church based on Norwegian architecture (why I don't know). But the people that go there are really creepy, in my book. It's a big landmark for my town and every once in a while they do concerts with various protégé kids doing classical stuff. It lends to a rather gothic and creepy air because they do it at night.

(not that user)
It's a good one. I never liked the names but the story is a good one. I also liked the White Ship but it's not as sad. I always wanted to do a song about that then found out it's already been done then thought, "I can do better" but haven't finished it, yet.

I love how Lovecraft and Robert Bloch (sp?) would rib each other in those stories by killing each other off constantly.
