That is called the forward assist, and its job is to jam recalcitrant shells into the chamber, for there to be more of shootings.

Seems weird if you use the FA it would jam. If yea ride the bolt and not let the bolt snap back and bottom out …thats what makes it jam…not the FA. The FA prevents that from happening. In the military they train you to always use the FA as part of muscle memory with each mag reload/charging. Now in civilian use it really does not apply. 9/10 people will clean their gun maybe not after each use… but more often. In civilian use …unless you are a shit bag and not clean the gun, or use some dirty ammo, or maybe put a crap ton of rounds though it….its not really needed.
