Sup Cred Forums, my bike got stolen from my campus last night (only had a shitty combo lock on it), so I'm buying a new one. My question to you is, what is the best commuter bike for me to get? I primarily use it to bike through a small city to and from work and school. Was thinking of a Schwinn Ascension mountain bike (pic related)...suggestions?

Also, I'm 6'6, so I can't get anything too small.

/n/ usually has a bike buy thread. I wouldn’t go with the Schwann because for the same price (assuming it’s at the MSRP of $350 ish) you can get a better used bike and might even be able to find a good bike at your local bike shop. The LBS bikes are usually put together better and many shops offer other services such as a free tune up or warranty services. That being said, the Schwinn Doesn’t look terrible. You can do worse but you certainly could do better.
Is the ride flat or hilly?
Do you carry much with you?
Are the roads in good condition or rough?
Serious answer.
Do you need something seriously off road capable? Are there big slopes? If not, a mountain bike is a very suboptimal choice.
Eh, a little hardtail without plus sized tires is likely ok. I’d take my hardtail over my 23mm roadie for commuting most of the time. City never sweeps the bike lanes.
I think your first priority would be getting a good lock and chain. Check out LockPickingLawyer on YouTube. Anything that requires the custom tool he built with BosnianBill should be adequate or your purposes.
As far as a bike, I only buy Cannondale mountain bikes when I need to.
Got this for $50 from Walmart. You're overspending, especially considering you just got jacked. It's got damn near everything I could want on a bike and I wouldn't feel uncomfortable biking on the trails in the woods around here either. Bike rack, front basket, parrot shaped horn, and the water bottle holder all would've cost more than $60 from Walmart but they'll sell you a brand new bike with all of 'em for $50, go figure.
A good robust lock and chain will cost $20-30. Get thick galvanized chain from a hardware store.
A third party gps tracker for when your shit gets jacked again wouldn't be a bad idea either. If you spend over $100 on your new Schwinn and don't get one then you don't know about protecting your investments. Someone will eventually try to steal your shit again, so be proactive.
fuck that shit ive put like not even kidding around 50k miles on my specialized hardrock 29er best bike ive ever owned by far
You can get 28mm tires for your road bike. Or even a cyclocross or gravel frame with clearance up to 40mm.
Usually the best option for commuting is a "gran fondo" style road bike with disc brakes.
A gravel bike with tires according to surface is a great option for everything.
find the nearest black guy from where it was locked up and ask for your bike back
