I've read it was very bad visibility that day with fog and clouds. Even with instruments, it's hard to gauge speed and such if you can't see. Sounds like bad judgement on everyone's part.

The elevation where they crashed was just over 1000' MSL. 9 pax, not sure of fuel load. They were operating under special VFR rules. The ceiling was around 800' where/when they crashed. The weird part for me was the diversion away from VNY where they were trying to land. If you're familiar with the area, Calabassas is actually quite far from VNY. The next closest airport would have been Camarillo, with potentially worse visibility, but would've also required flying into zero visibility. So much about this whole thing makes zero sense.

The pilot was well known and respected in the SoCal aviation community. Definitely a knowledgable pilot. Which adds to why all of this is just weird. Just a damn shame to lose 9 lives like this.

I assume this is a case of Get There itis, probably had external pressures and decided to risk it flying VFR into IMC which is a main killer for pilots especially helicopter ones that are supposed to not fly into IMC

Yeah that's my guess too, I try to train this with newer pilots in the army to be comfortable doing a pop up clearance. Its like... not a big deal at all like you literally call someone on the radio and say who you are and where you're going with details. No reason to be afraid. But a lot of pilots dont fly instruments often enough to be confident.
