Mark my words, this is what happened. SVFR is 500' below cloud cover with 3mi visibility. Not uncommon authorization for a helicopter. As he rounded Calabasas the ceiling suddenly dropped. He was already low to the ground he did not want to risk going any lower. It is very easy to become disoriented in a helicopter in no vis situations. You can be sliding to the side or rolling, or even have a wild yaw without knowing it. Your eyes disagree with your other senses and the brain becomes confused. Even well-experienced and veteran pilots fall victim to this. He made a well-intended but fatal decision: he tried to climb but in reality took a left turn into the ground. Chances are no one knew what was going on until they hit.

The pilot was also circling while waiting for authorization to fly below normal restrictions so he could fly along the path of the 101 freeway. This is not unusual in LA airspace. When the cloud based lowered below 1,000 feet, he began a U-turn to land somewhere else (probably Santa Monica), that's when he crashed into the hillside obscured by fog.
